Interested to here what the "general" cycling community feels about TT'ing.

Have you tried time trialling?, if so, have you continued?, if not, why not.

Would you like to try time trialling?, if so, what is holding you back?.

IMO It's a very accessible form of amateur racing and a great way to get started. Friendly atmosphere and good fun.

I've tried a few early on this season and will probably do some next year. Some people really get the bug and buy all the gear but I'm happy just using some aero bars on my roadie.

I started TTing at our local club about 6 weeks ago. 5 10's later (and more than two and a half minutes off my initial time) and I did a 12hr. Absolutely loved it and can't wait to do more.

... a fairly pure form of racing for most of us... you against the clock (at least until you're finished and compare stats)... also, a great outlet for the less "competitive" out there... those who see participation as good a reason as win at all costs.

BTW, here are my TT rigs

    No.

For a whole raft of reasons but mainly because I don't want to race on roads with busy traffic.

I think the number of responses to this thread indicates the level of relevance of time trialling to many new cyclists in the UK today.

  • having bluffed it for most of the year, I did my first 10 mile TT on wednesday.

After about 3 miles i was wrecked, after 5 miles I thought I was going to blow, after 7 miles a thought I was going to barf. Crossing the line I had pains in my chest from a lingering cold and thought I was going to pass out. I thought to myself, 'what sort of idiot wants to put themselves through this torture regularly?'

Once I got home I now cant wait until the new season starts!
  • I think I would do it on my current bike with my current gear just to see if I could beat my own time. But I don't want to do it on busy roads. But TBH I am way to slow, my best average to date is 15.9 miles an hour over 10 miles, I think everybody would beat me.
  • its something i'm looking into at the minute, but seems the seasons just finished.

I gave the local 10 mile tt route a go, using strava  to give me an indication against others, and I did a 28min run. This wasnt particularly planned, and i didnt know the route, but for me i'm now keen to get involved and try it.

For me, its a nice simple way of competing, boosting my fitness and training regime whilst having a bit of fun. obviously the idea of doing it on an open road isnt ideal but for someone who just wants a taster of competition its ideal imo.

I use some local club TTs as threshold training sessions for road racing. Nothing like a time-keeper with a stopwatch to provide some motivation. Standard road bike, no aero bars or pointy hat.

As you well know Danowat I race in many of the same races as you so I'm a bit biased but after my first full season (as full as it can be for me) I'm hooked. It is just so easy to get involved. No licences to worry about, you can just rock up to a club event and race, even Opens are ok if you remember to enter on time  The best thing is the people, everybody is friendly and helpful, nobody judges you or your equipment, everybody suffers the same and feels the same after the race whether they crack 20m for a 10TT or 30m.

It may be of interest that I'm hoping to run through my club( VC Norwich) a short series of 'come and try it' TT events next spring. Based on a 5m course and the emphasis on improvement rather than outright speed. This series will be aimed at all riders who haven't TT'd before, including commuters and MTBs as well as roadies. Hope to have more info on it soon.

Doing one tomorrow, but we're hardy up here in the Highlands - it finishes at the top car park of Cairngorm Mountain. Can't beat a wee climb now and then.....
