Gauge not working with MTB tyres

I have a Bontrager Charger track pump. When I do my MTB tyres the gauge did not work, so I thought that it was faulty and was thinking to get a new one or a digital gauge. But the other day I got my road bike out and inflated the tyre and the gauge worked ok. Both bike use Presta valves.
Any ideas why it works with the road bike and not with the mtb bike?

You're just not putting enough air in the MTB?

Don't think so, tyre is hard enough

What pressure does the track pump read from?
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

you have to put it on properly

my charger does have issues with presta valves that are slightly bent

wont open the valve properly so the pressure is slow to move into the tube, after 20 psi I disconnect and re-attached and it tends to work.....

OK, thanks I will try that, put strange that I don't attach the pump correctly everytime. With the MTB tyres I can see the needle going up but then back to zero straight away.

Not sure about what you mean. But just in case, I managed to pump to 100psi the road bike tyres. On the MTB, needle goes up to about 20 but then shot back down to zero immediately.

Yes it is  Forgot I posted that. What I did not know at the time though was that it is working with the road bike, so the gauge do work but just not with MTB tyres.
