Gauge not working with MTB tyres

I have a Bontrager Charger track pump. When I do my MTB tyres the gauge did not work, so I thought that it was faulty and was thinking to get a new one or a digital gauge. But the other day I got my road bike out and inflated the tyre and the gauge worked ok. Both bike use Presta valves.
Any ideas why it works with the road bike and not with the mtb bike?

You're just not putting enough air in the MTB?0

What pressure does the track pump read from?Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

you have to put it on properly
my charger does have issues with presta valves that are slightly bent
wont open the valve properly so the pressure is slow to move into the tube, after 20 psi I disconnect and re-attached and it tends to work.....0 -
