When do you change cleats?

Im sure its been asked before.
I have a pair of look cleats and the 3 "rubber grips" are wearing away.
I ordered a pair of look keo easy pedals for my work bike which come with cleats, but the cleats are completly plastic, i.e no rubber grips.
I thought once the grips have worn away it means time to replace, but it cant be if the new cleats have no grips?

The rubber grips are just a "nice to have", they are not involved in connecting you to the bike at all, just aid walking around a bit. They tend to wear off very quickly if you do walk around in them though. The actual cleats themselves will be barely worn in and have plenty of life yet I should think.Cannondale Supersix 2011

My rubber bits wore away very quickly. Walking to the office can sometimes be fun. Especially trying to walk on tiles. Its like bambi wth cycle gear onCube Attain SL Disc

Look cleats have a wear indicator: when the white dots show through the main cleat colour, it's time to replace. For me, I usually replace when the front edge chips away and clipping in is noticeably less secure. This always happens on the right cleat first as that's the one I put on the ground. I only replace one cleat at a time. I don't buy the "grip" cleats, just the normal ones for a tenner from Decathlon.0

Also look out for wear on the screws. When I recently replaced my Keo cleats I noticed that the most forward screw was worn and had I left it much longer I may have struggled to get it out.0
