Im sure its been asked before.

I have a pair of look cleats and the 3 "rubber grips" are wearing away.

I ordered a pair of look keo easy pedals for my work bike which come with cleats, but the cleats are completly plastic, i.e no rubber grips.

I thought once the grips have worn away it means time to replace, but it cant be if the new cleats have no grips?

The rubber grips are just a "nice to have", they are not involved in connecting you to the bike at all, just aid walking around a bit. They tend to wear off very quickly if you do walk around in them though. The actual cleats themselves will be barely worn in and have plenty of life yet I should think.

  • My rubber bits wore away very quickly. Walking to the office can sometimes be fun. Especially trying to walk on tiles. Its like bambi wth cycle gear on

Look cleats have a wear indicator: when the white dots show through the main cleat colour, it's time to replace. For me, I usually replace when the front edge chips away and clipping in is noticeably less secure. This always happens on the right cleat first as that's the one I put on the ground. I only replace one cleat at a time. I don't buy the "grip" cleats, just the normal ones for a tenner from Decathlon.

Also look out for wear on the screws. When I recently replaced my Keo cleats I noticed that the most forward screw was worn and had I left it much longer I may have struggled to get it out.
