Have I missed the boat on the sales?

The past few months I have been looking for a bargain deal on a road bike (ideally less than £500 with as much bang for my buck as possible).

It just seems apart from the Triban 3 at £300 there is nothing in the £300-£500 price bracket worth considering. When I looked at the Triban 3 in Decathlon it didn't bowl me over. All the entry level models from Trek, Cube, Specialized and Giant retail for £550 minimum with many of the 2013 models having a poorer spec than the 2012 models which have sold out.

Are there any alternatives I haven't considered? Ideally something with a carbon fork and decent groupset for a beginner. I'd like to avoid buying second hand off eBay (the prices are inflated anyway) as I'm not sure what size I'm after, plus I'd prefer to be fitted in a shop for my first purchase.

  • Have a look at Canyon Roadlite. Site isn't working for me at the moment so can't link you to it.
  • I'm in exactly the same situation as you, I like the weight of the triban 3 but it doesn't seem to be in stock for my medium size for delivery. I'm half tempted by the Halfords Carrera, although this is a last resort, I just can't seem to find a good deal at the moment
  • If you can stretch to 700 then don't look any further than this http://www.canyon.com/_uk/roadbikes/bike.html?b=2501

seriously the canyon is the only bike in this price range worth buying so well equiped for the money... no regrets i promise...
  • Firstly the Canyon isn't in the OP's price range and secondly they only have one size available.

There is nothing wrong with the Carerra range of bikes, I have commuted over 15,000 miles on my Tiagra equipped Vanquish and have only had to replace the chain and tyres. Claud Butler and Raleigh both make good value road bikes in this price range too.

Have you missed the sales, no there will be another lot along in the new year but I would suggest buying a bike and riding it is more important than finding the "best" deal anyway as LA said "It's not about the bike".

Hmm does epo fit into the OP's budget then???

Nah that is for people who ride carbon bikes as well...
