Slowly upgrading groupset

I know it's true for certain components like chains and shifters but can all parts of a Shimano groupset be either 105 or Ultegra as long as it's all 10 speed? I'm asking as my current set up is all 105 but i'm looking to upgrade certain parts of it and am looking to invest in Ultegra if possible.

Yes, although the brake ratios changed for the x700 ranges. They will still work but not be optimised for feel and power. So if you get 105 5700 brake shifters you should match with similar age calipers, not 105 5600.
