Will it improve much?

My Record Sprint has a 6 speed freewheel (14-24T) and on the front 42T/52T.
Even in the lower gear i'm finding it a struggle with hills.
I've seen a replacement freewheel 14-28T will this make much difference or will I really need to go for a triple or compact chainset?

Congrats for your classic bike... I have a 1980 s too. Get a 14-26 freewheel from campyoldy, 28 is a big ask for period derailleurs. I have climbed rather big stuff on 42x26
