Looking at new lighting for my winter commuting, mainly 18 miles of dark country lanes.
Does anyone have any knowledge of / experience with, the Cree T6 LED type headlights / bikelights, multitudes of them on e-bay from Hong Kong /China...............all about £25 -£30.
I can't afford a foretune for nuke proof / frog eye's etc.

Had one for 3 years and only the battery is starting to struggle to hold it's charge. For the money you can't go wrong. Plenty of UK suppliers as well for this price and you won't have to wait as long.0

buy with confidence fella,,
iv had a couple of the t6 cree led front lights from china, 1200 lumin and also the 1600 lumin
battery packs last for ages, and the lights are mega mega bright , much better quality than you would expect for the price,
the only stumbling block is the wait, but i see there are a couple of uk sellers for not a lot more
only sold them on due to the constant nagging from friends who didnt want to take the china risk..
not an issue for me, as i have another coming over LOL
rear light i have stuck to the Lunar R2,, super brightSpecialized S Works SL2 . Campagnolo Record 11spd. rolling on Campag Zonda wheels

I have just taken delivery of two of these and whilst the torches are, sort of, OK the mount is useless. The eBay bumff says it is good for 33mm diameter bars. No chance it wouldn't fit a 25mm bar without distorting the mount and risking scratching the bars. They are going back and I'll try again.
Smart light for the rear rather than the freebie that comes with the Cree lights - they are dreadful.0 -
Smart light for the rear or a Cateye 1100.
As for me I'd rather pay good money and get a bright and highly relable, well engineered light - but then I do an awful lot of night riding given the hours In which I go for my rides.0 -
I bought one of these 11 months ago http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SSC-P7-1200Lm-LED-Bicycle-bike-HeadLight-headLamp-Light-/170514393420?pt=UK_SportsLeisure_Cycling_Bike_Lights&hash=item27b373294c&_uhb=1
More than happy with it! I rode all winter at 6:30am for 30 to 40 miles through unlit county lanes and it never let me down once. I got it out last month for a night ride and it still works perfectly.
The only negative I would say is that the beam is very wide, but it does a great job. The handlebar mount works perfectly with a piece of rubber under the mount. I've even cut the elastic off the head mount and zip tied it to an old helmet and it works perfectly as a helmet mounted MTB light.Summer - Canyon Ultimate CF SLX 9.0 Team

i cant see how a light can be made any better for the money
i have had a few now and they are all going strong still, 18 months later....
each to their own i guess, but you can tknock a £30 light that never fails in 18 months, and is dirt cheap for the performance it gives..

There's a MASSIVE thread on them in the MTB Buying section. Mostly specific to seeing in the dark as opposed to being seen with, but I assume that's what you want on the back roads? They're too powerful for in traffic, you'll blind everyone in sight - though they do tend to have several modes.
Personally I'd use two. Something fairly conventional with loads of battery life, and one of the Chinese jobbies as your 'full beam'.0 -

This is good stuff: http://www.torchythebatteryboy.com/
Personally, I have the original 900 lumen Magicshine with the upgraded battery in the sealed aluminium pack. I've found it to be very reliable and bright enough for dark lanes. I got it from the deal xtreme UK warehouse for about £50 and it arrived in a few days. If buying again, I would opt for a Fluxient from above guy on Ebay or a Moon Power 1500 from the LBS.0 -
I have one of the Hong Kong Cree type torches on my commuter and it's brilliant! I bought mine from a Uk seller on Ebay for just a couple of quid more than the Hong Kong price. The mount I got is good, I have used it on my TT bike as well and it fits well. The torch is certainly bright enough for back road commuting at night, my route is a mix of really dark woods and open farmland roads and I can see perfectly well to cruise at 20mph even at 2am.Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

im on the roads a lot, commuting back from work on roads with the aboev lights would be a bit stupid right? i need something a little less bright. bear in mind a lot fo these roads aren't lit so i will still need soemthign bright, but not something that coudl cuase a danger to oncoming traffic.
any suggestions?Bikes: CAAD8 105, CAAD10 105.0 -

Delivered today so yet to try them on the road. Incredibly bright!0 -
More than one at the rear is also a good idea. Saves the embarrassment \ death of having one crap out on you and you not noticing it, which you won't unless you're riding behind yourself.Mangeur0

You really can't beat a couple of 501bs on your bars for £6 a pop. Plus some old laptop batteries a £5 charger and cheap mounts. But eBay is not the place to get them. Buy direct from lightmalls and other hk sellers and save a bit. Check the link in my sig for more details. XML t6 or U2 are the best options it then how many you run. My 501bs put out genuine 500 lumen easy. Note the t6 is 1000 lumen at 3a max so lights claiming 1200 lumen are more like 800.0

I couldn't take a picture that is capable of showing just how bright these things are0 -
Either of these two would be good for road bikes as an alternative to torches:
Twin LED (XM-L) £29
Triple LED (all XM-L) £38
or two of these at £7:
