Cyclocross bike

I had a pretty bad smash over the weekend. Thankfully I've been stitched up and am OK overall, really lucky in fact. Less can be said for my bike or the car I collided with.

However it seems the insurance will pay out. I was on my road bike, Allez 16, so will have after adding a few quid myself about £650 to play with. I'm considering a crosser instead of a full roadie. I mainly use the bike for commuting (between 30 and 50 miles per day) and the occasional 20 -30 mile ride at weekends.

Would a cross be OK for this and if so what brands/bikes are out there that would fit my budget?

Thanks for your input in advance.

Lots of people using Cyclocross bikes over in the Commuting section.

I use a Specialized Tricross, which fits the bill quite nicely. You might be able to pick one up within your budget.

I'm also considering a new commuter, however, and the one that looks good to me is the Ribble Winter/Audax bike. I've not tried one (so this is not a recommendation, merely a 'why not think about it' suggestion), but I see a lot of people using them, they get good reviews and they're good value. And while I like the Tricross, because I never actually use it offroad or for its intended purpose, it seems that buying a 'proper' road bike that's designed for long distance and poor conditions might be a better option.

Was it your fault or the cars ? If its the cars - then they should compensate you for your injuries. That may give you a bit more cash for the new bike.

Not really sure to be honest, happened so quick. Regardless I'm not really the blame/claim type.
