Pot hole, creased rim and council

Hi guys

I was using my road bike the other day cycling along a footpath/cycle lane split. Half way along is a give way where the path crosses a road. When going up the dropped kerb there is a section of the tarmac that has fallen into a pot hole, when crossing this on my bike I managed to lift the front wheel over the gap but the rear wheel hit it very hard. I checked the wheel and one of the spokes is now loose. I pushed it home where checking the rim I found there is a small crease. I looked on the Solihull council website about potholes and they basically say they outsource this to someone else and good luck trying to get anything out of them, they pay less than 15% of claims and unless someone had already reported this they don't have to pay. Is it worth pursuing the council for a claim and also should I replace the whole wheel now or just tighten the spoke (I am thinking even if the wheel is still strong enough it may cause issues with the brakes locking up the back wheel).

Any advice or successes and failures with local councils, would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

  • You could have a look here to see if it has been reported, obvioulsy this doesn't include any reports direct to the council.

I bent two rims on one pothole (and I think damaged the frame) - in the end I couldn't be bothered to pursue it though I may yet change my mind because they keep doing a crap job of repairing the hole - it was repaired within about 4 working days of me reporting it but seemingly by the sort of no-necks who threaten you into having your driveway done badly. Within 6 weeks it was lethal again. After about 3 or four months (end of July) they repaired it again and it is deteriorating again.

Anyway, if your wheels are good quality, you may be able to replace the rims. Mine were handmade so I just ordered new replacements plus a pair of rims which I'll build up near enough to get them professionally straightened. The rims were less than a tankfull of petrol so I can live with that.

Get a shop to check/true the wheel.

Ask if the pothole has been reported, if not, report it. Or just report it through FillThatHole.

Also worth looking on http://www.fixmystreet.com/ to see if it has been reported there.

If it's anything like this part of the world, cyclists are pretty quick to report, whereas the council are very slow to repair issues with cycle paths (unlike roads, where they're typically pretty quick) so you may be in luck.
