Events for Beginners

Hi all
After always doing road/communter cycling, I've just a new mtb (Decathlon Rockrider 8.1) as I want a change and want to do mountain biking off roading, something I've wanted to do for a long time. There is a local group that I am going out with but was looking for any advice/guidance on what sort of events were good to start off with, as a beginner in this area?
Thanks for any advice

Oops I forgot that bit!!! I live on the Nottinghshire/Derbyshire border, so I guess anything around the midlands, but I'm used to travelling to events (as I do various running events too).
Any advice on good ones to start with would be great.
Thanks again.0 -
There is a Midlands XC series of events, plus a 'Mud, Sweat & Gears' series, based in the East. Both are spring/summer though. There are a series of winter enduro races around Thetford, which would be a good starting point, or the Gorrick series are fantastic, but south of London around Berks/Hants/Surrey.0
