However, since taking to the road, Ive observed that my fellow roadies don't seem to be carrying bulging Camelback Mules. Where you you lot hide your spare tubes, pumps etc? Don't you get punctures?
Roadies out for a leisure ride will travel as light as possible, and we tend to avoid backpacks if we can help it. I normally commute with a backpack and on other rides I've needed to carry stuff, but today was different, I was out purely to ride, so no backpack, just the front door key and my phone. It was a revelation, with no load to carry, I felt like I was flying along, even on this heavyish hybrid :D

So far I have not had any punctures, the standard tyres seem very resistant, but I will be getting a small saddlebag to keep a spare tube, patches, tyre levers and multitool. A pump will be carried too. When I finally get a road bike, it will also get a saddlebag for it with the same stuff in it.

If I'm going on a very long ride (more than 30 miles) I'll take some small snacks in the jersey pockets, a rain jacket if the weather could be dodgy, but as little as needed.

  • I have one of those Lyzme pumps with the little flexi hose. Just about fits in the saddlebag. I use to have a generic pump on the frame but the endcap fell off and I didn't realise what it was, just a light plastic knock noise but the bike felt good so I didn't think anything of it. Obviously I noticed when I picked up a puncture and could only get about 30psi into the tyre....

So pump, repair kit with glue etc, 2 tubes (after hitting a pothole and doing both tubes in one go), handful of various tools, phone and a little money (usually a fiver or tenner). Oh a miniture bottle of suncream for really hot days. Except for the phone that fills my medium saddlebag.

In a small Lezyne seat pack:
    Lezyne self adhesive patch kit
    Small Park multitool
    Tyre levers
    Spare tube
    Couple of zip ties
    2 x £10 notes

    In my jersey pocket:
    Lezyne road drive pump
    Phone
Emergency food (in case I really get it wrong and bonk)

  • In Continental tube bag (a really small saddle bag):
    spare tube
    park tools spare patch set
    glue
    small piece of chalk
    tyre levers

    In Jersey:
    Topeak HP race rocket
standard multitool (no chain tool or anything)
    Phone
    Debit Card
    Cash
    Keys
    Food

I'll take that on most rides.. then add or take away from it depending on weather, distances etc.

eg. For a sportive I take two tubes, a chain tool, more food, KMC powerlink, map etc.
  • Inner tube, Puncture repair kit (incl. multi-tools), 1 energy bar, 1 energy-water supplement, hand-pump, 2 x 800ml water bottles, phone, £10 emergency money, Route notes
