Just a couple of questions too:
Whats the difference between GS and SGS when talking about the rear mech
Whats the difference between top/down swing (is it just the way the gear cable routes to the mech?).
Will the sproket size choice be suitable for a relative beginner riding in the peaks, trail centres etc?
Thanks,
Here it is so far, I imagine it wont be to most peoples taste

GS/SGS is cage length.
Top swing/down swing is the position of the band clamp. IE low down/high up. Find out what the frame needs.
For full versatility go for the 11-36.0 -
Thanks SS.
Ive done a bit of research and *think* I'll need a top swing. Something I forgot to ask, are the i-spec shifters ok (Ive got 2013 SLX brakes) or should I stick with the traditional mounts?0 -
I'd stick with traditional.0

Personally - I'd go for a 22/36 crankset and an 11-32 cassette and then you can get away with a medium cage rear mech

You want a top swing on a Trance, I'd go with felix with a 22/36 and 11/34 thats what im currently running on my trance albeit 9 speed.
I'd be inclined to go with the ispec shifters for sake of keeping the controls neat and simple unless they're significantly more expensive?0 -

Thanks Felix. I want a bashguard anyway but I took special note at the weekend and I spent most of my time in the middle and big ring on a 3x8 set-up so am thinking a 38/26 rather than 36/22 would suit me better. Im not sure how different it'll be in real life having a 10 speed on the back?
The linked crankset are 9-sp, from looking at a few forums this should be OK with other components being 10-sp??0
