Morzine which climbs?

All being well it looks like I'm off to Morzine next summer. I know there are some well know tour climbs in the area:
Morzine to Avoriaz and the Col de Joux Plane to name but 2. Are there any other climbs in the immediate area without having to travel to far from Morzine. Perhaps some that have not featured in the tour. Ideas on routes from Morzine would also be helpful. Cheers.

    I did a few days riding close to Morzine - Col de Joux Plane is a great climb & it's possible to make a loop of it (see the link below);

This link also includes Col de Colombiere which is well worth a climb (we drove to the bottom, but could be day ride on it's own if you ride from Morzine).

I also did the Col de Pierre Carree which finishes at Flaine

Other local climbs include Col de la Ramaz, Col de la Joux Verte & Col de l'Ecrenaz

Finally, you might want to check this website - I've used it to plan my last 5 trips to France & Switzerland!!! It's a great way to research potential rides.

I hope this is useful & that you have a great trip!!!
  • Mr Goo,
I spend a lot of time in morzine and the roads are great - check out www.velovation.co.uk, I did two day rides with them a couple of weeks ago - support vehicle and Mark , the owner, rides with the group -150km to chamonix over joux-plane and several other climbs ,avoiding major roads , stunning scenery and no need to take a map, was the highlight , then a quick beer while the bikes were loaded onto the minibus for the return drive home - I just e-mailed him the week before and he let me know his plans and i chose which day(s) i wanted to join in - cost approx 38 Euros per day -including lunch and coffee en route - I think the price varies depending on numbers - but i thought excellent value

    cheers Bob

I know you already know about it, but here's another vote for the Joux Plane. I rode this with my son this summer after riding Morzine Avoriaz in the morning. Joux Plane was much prettier and more varied, and the lake at the top is beautiful with a cafe offering views over Mont Blanc. Mind you, its steep at the bottom!
    Enjoy it!

Aravis follows on from Colombiere. Great riding round that whole part of the world, what I wouldn't give to be there now...

Thanks for replies. I have the TdF book of climbs, and Joux Plane and Colombiere are the two big climbs I aim to do. Have heard that Joux Vert is worth doing. Also planning to do a day where I can take in Switzerland and Italy, then can say I have ridden in three countries in one day, daft but fun.

  • Spent a week in Samoens this August, which is at the foot of the joux-plane. We did that a couple of times. Brilliant. Although starting it at 2pm in 37 degrees is not the smartest thing to do!

We also did the Col de Colombiere from Cluse/Scionvier. Whilst the climbbybike.com details for the colombiere look more benign than the Joux-Plane, there is a flattish section half way through which means that the average climbing is tougher than it looks. It gets harder towards the end.

We also did the Col de la Ramaz/Pra de lys from Meuse, back to Taninge via the Les Gets road. Again, a lovely climb, with a very tough section through a tunnel into a brilliant open cwm before descending.

I can also recommend a lovely shortish ride from Samoens up to the cwm at fer de sixt cheval (or something like that...due east of Samoens). Flattish but gorgeous views at the end.

There is also the climb to Avoriaz, of course.

    Enjoy!
  • Agree with all of the above. The ride up to Flaine from Cluses is a tough climb and you can return to Chattilion to make a loop. If you want tough climb for the sake of it the road up to Samoens 1600 is a toughie. Is above 12% for about 4km of the 12 (from memory) and lovely views of the ski lift at the top. :)
  • There is a great book of rides you can pick up from the tourist office in Les Gets

The climb up to Praz de lys from the Les Gets side is a bit of a brute. Also the col de l'Encrenaz is a beautiful route which takes you round the back of Les Gets (Mont Chery side) back round to Morzine, maybe not the hardest but the top has a nice wee bar for a drink.
