Canyon arrived!! Can't ride it :(

I'm absolutely gutted! I'd been waiting eagerly for 2 weeks for my brand new Grand Canyon AL 6.0 to arrive from Germany. It finally arrived last Thursday, but I'd woken up on Wednesday morning in agony with my knee, unable to bend or straighten it. I went to A&E, where after a 3 hour wait was told by a nurse that they didn't think it was broken (which I already knew) and that further investigation would require an ultrasound, which I had to get via my GP.
Luckily, I managed to get an appointment on Friday morning. I've been in agony with this, with swelling (no redness) around my left knee, unable to walk, let alone drive. I haven't knowingly injured it or caused any trauma, which is the mystery, and I felt my GP was confused as to what it was too. He eventually diagnosed me with tendonitis (which was a whole lot better deal than my own internet-researched self-diagnosis of septic arthritis!) and prescribed me anti-inflammatories and painkillers. I don't think it's that and it's got worse each day, so am getting pretty worried now and will be going to the doctor again as soon as I can, when I'll request a test for gout, which is what I now think it may be.
I've never had pain like this and am pretty debilitated at the moment. However, my girlfriend has been absolutely brilliant looking after me and, despite the agony, she helped me assemble my machine on Thursday! I've included some pictures below - it's a thing of beuaty! I've been looking forward to getting this, my first bike since I was a teenager (I'm 35 now), and I'm COMPLETELY GUTTED that I can't ride it! With some pain and assistance, I can sit on it. I've wheeled it round the kitchen a few times and can confirm that the brakes stop on a frickin dime from 0.25 mph!!
I bought loads of accessories too - mini pump, Topeak Alien II multitool, waterbottle and holder, lights, quick-release mudguards, glasses, shorts, gloves, fork mudcatcher, Superstar pedals...
Anyway, here it is, and sorry about the variable quality of the photos from my mobile phone. Tried to make them look nice -

I presume you mean the one on the back wheel? Is that a daft thing to have on there? In my condition, without a workstand, it was a real chore getting that back wheel on. I don't think I'm gonna go through the hassle of removing it!Canyon Nerve AL 7.00 -

Gutted for you, have had both tendonitus (in my foot) and gout in my big toe  The tendonitus ended up with me on crutches for a week and the gout with me on the sofa with my foot up (both very painful). Hope you get better soon mate and get out on that great looking machine__________________

Thanks very much, Myster101. Because I don't definitively know what the problem is yet, I'm at that stage where I'm hoping it's gout and not something worse. I'll be posting as soon as I'm out on it! Cheers!Canyon Nerve AL 7.00 -

Gutted for you......hope you're on Ibuprofen AND Paracetomol for the swelling, occasional ice and elevation, may not cure it but keeping the swelling down will make recovery faster.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Thanks for your kind words, guys! @The Beginner - the doctor has prescribed me Naproxen, which is a prescription-only anti-inflammatory and Co-codamol for the pain. The swelling seems to have come up more, despite the pain going down slightly when I move it. I still can't bend my knee past 90 degrees though without agony and a lot of resistance. My Mum and bro have all had knee issues over the years and I really sympathise with them now!Canyon Nerve AL 7.00

That bike looks very nice! Shame you cant ride it! I have had Tendentious in both my Achilles so around my ankles for the last 2 years! It can be very sore and frustrating but i started to get used to it its no where as bad as it originally was, i think i didnt ride my bike for about 2-3 Months and then felt i had to, i'm afraid not a lot can be done about it!SPECIALIZED ROCKHOPPER EXPERT 20120

It's starting to feel a little less painful and swollen today, thanks. I'm going to go to the doctor's again, as I'm not convinced it's tendonitis..
I just can't wait to recover now...Canyon Nerve AL 7.00 -

From the text description, sounds like gout my friend :S I have suffered from it since my mid 20's, took years to get a confirmed diagnosis (this is usual). I get it all over my body, no joint is safe! :S If you have it return again in the next year or two, get down the docs asap and ask them to do a blood test for it.
Hope you are back on your feet now and on the bike, looks awesome!0 -
My knee is near enough recovered now and I am overjoyed to have been out a few times over the last couple of weeks. I haven't done any serious offroad stuff yet, but I'm going to visit a friend in York this weekend to both play a gig and do some more serious biking - can't wait!! My friend says he's taking me to where they do some national competitions. Can't remember where he said, but it sounds good. Hope the weather holds out. Even though I've only been on tame ground, I've found myself tempted to fling this thing around a bit, I feel so comfortable on it. Having not ridden properly for over 20 years (35 now), this is a good sign! I will take care though..Canyon Nerve AL 7.00

Thanks for your reply. The truth is I really don't know what it is, but the pain when it happened was so debilitating, I felt like my whole knee joint was destroyed - I was nearly in tears on a couple of occasions! Ironically, my hospital appointment with the specialist is next Tuesday! It's taken that long to get the appt and my knee is near enough back to normal. I really hope they can still tell me what the problem may have been, especially since I had almost exactly the same thing about 6 months ago in my ankle, again without any trauma. Very strange..Canyon Nerve AL 7.00 -

Hi
So how are you now any better ????
How's the bike ????0 -
Hope everything is going well mate. You got my sympathy I am currently sitting with my right leg up and a pack of frozen peas on my knee. Its been troubling me for years but this week its really giving me hell went for a quick spin this morning to make sure my bike okay for a big ride tommorow, halfway through my knee started clicking and by the end I was down to about 8 mph pushing with left leg only. Supposed to be taking my girl out for lunch and shopping but instead going to be watching crappy telly and surfing ebay for shiny things whilst overdosing on frozen peas and anti inflammatoriesFig rolls: proof that god loves cyclists and that she wants us to do another lap0

Thanks for your words, guys. I didn't end up riding this weekend, as I got drunk in York on Friday night and twisted my ankle really badly jumping of a wall. I really am destined not to ride this bike. Fate is trying to tell me something!!!
Stubs, really hope your leg improves soon mate. It's awful to feel hampered and disabled, ain't it?

Thanks Matt got the swelling down enough to go riding sunday but we had to stick to back lanes, tracks, bridleways and canal towpaths I was in no condition to do the usual romp in the hills. Weather was fantastic I think the sunshine helped me pedal, knee is creaking today but not too bad.Fig rolls: proof that god loves cyclists and that she wants us to do another lap0 -

winter zombie - I'm up in Manchester. Will let you know if I ever get down that way though..
I went for my hospital appointment today and the doc reckons it sounds like problems with my medial meniscus. He certainly found the spots to press where it really effin hurt, anyway! That's to be confirmed by MRI on Nov 19th, then possible keyhole surgery if that's the case. It ain't stopping me riding though!Canyon Nerve AL 7.00
