I have taken my first steps into using SPD's i have shimano m520's, when using them I do not hear a click when i put my foot in and when it is in it feels really loose, so lose my foot comes out really easy, In fact I would say to easy, even just by lifing my foot without to much pressure my foot comes out, is this normal?

How much tension have you got in the pedals, maybe try adding some more?

Also what cleats are you using, multi release? single release?

I don't always hear them "click" into place but I've not had them just pull out too easily. The looseness you're feeling could just be float, your feet aren't held firmly in one position, they're supposed to be able to move/rotate a bit when you're clipped in.
  • Right I think I have it fixed now, I think they are single release SM-SH51, the cleats came with the pedals, and I just tried them out of the box, i knew that there was something wrong as my feet would just pull out without and resistance at all and could be dangerous if it happened at the wrong time.

I have now just adjusted the tension so it is at the least it can be, now I hear a very positive click and my feet feel secure, i do not know what the issue was but when i changed the tension to the - point i heard a click, and now all is well.

The range of adjustment is pretty wide, from 'held in by the power of positive thought only' to 'a pair of concrete boots, courtesy of your local mafia'. Playing with the tension is important. As is making sure all 4 tensions are the same!

    + some other bikes.
  • Yep, Set them all to the loosest position for now and at least they are working now
