Do I need my bearings looked at?

I have a lovely old Specialized Rockhopper which my partner bought for me recently as my first proper mountain bike.
I love it but it's developed a click ( or Clunk, depending on your viewpoint ) which occurs with every pedal stroke but only when pressure is being applied to the pedals as in climbing or accellerating hard.
I'm struggling to locate the source but suspect it's bottom bracket or pedal. I intend to change out the pedals for another pair that I have to see if it's coming from the pedal but if that doesn't cure it then I suspect bottom bracket and I believe it could be a bearing issue.
Anyone got any ideas and if so how do I cure it?

Like you've said. Change pedals, still the same, then change bb0
