New and need advice on what to buy

I am new into MTB and have little experience on them, I use to ride a BMX, anyway I was wonder what I should be looking for, I will be using it off-road very little, I want a strong bike that can be used for street/jumping, lightweight etc, I have around 400 to spend or more if finance is available.

You ain't going to get lightweight and strong at this price. But if you can stretch to this, is about the best there is for the use you describe. May be a little big for all out jumping though:

As I want a bike which I will mainly use for riding the street and now and then off onto grass/down steps.
I have a budget of around 600 if I can get one on finance, I want front suspension but not fussed about rear.0 -
