Morning all,

Have set my budget at £300 for a new steed to peddle the 5 miles a day to work and back, also may use it as a way of keeping fit for the mountain bike. Dont like drop bars so thats the only thing I wont consider. Had a look at a few any comments on them, see below, or any others I should consider.

Thanks

This is a bit of a bargain if you ask me (and you don't mind buying from Halfords): http://bit.ly/Pelh5q.

I've got a short commute too. I got a dutch bike for £340. Really heavy, really slow. But it doesn't matter as it's only 5 miles a day.

If the commute is only 5 miles, have you thought about a fixie or single speed?

Personally I think this is cracking value http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=67796 for what you get.

Saying that I have a Scott Sub 30 2011 and love that but it is black so a bit more discreet and has better spec.

Yes have not ruled out singlespeed or fixie just dont want drop bars. Vitus Vee 1 looks good keep em coming, ideally the bike will be suited to longer rides to keep the fitness up and something not too girly I have a little street cred left :D

  • Is this the general consensus then?

I'm in the same position as sirichmond and was looking at the V1 or the ridgeback speed.

My only issue with the V1 is what if something goes wrong out the box or in the first few months?

Thing about the Vee-1, it's so bloody simple there's really nothing to go wrong, CRC have pretty good customer service but there's nothing more complicated than a BMX. It has an air of solidness about it too, pedals are the only thing thats a bit cheap and nasty.

Great fun to ride too. :D

So I'm sold on the Vitus now especially as they apear to do a 29er version which could be the perfect choice, wanting to get a 29er hardtail for a while so this would solve my commuting and needing to get on the 29er bandwagon. Anyone got the 29er version of the Vitus Vee 1 like to leave any comments?

I agree & it would be my choice - just as long as you are happy with one gear. Im my view it's a bonus in terms of simplicity, weight & reliability. Can't help with the 29 inch version but I'm sure it's fine.

Last time I looked, the 29'er was only available in 16 inch frame, which is a bummer because I would have bought one and given the 26'er to SWMBO. :(

  • If you can do it on the cycle to work scheme you might save yourself a few quid?

Second best commuter I ever had was a 25-year-old Peugeot racer. It cost a tenner. In some ways you might be better off looking for something like that and putting your £300 towards something else.
  • I have recently bought one of these http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165534 after my Marin Palisades Trail was stolen and needed to get to work. Great little bike IMO
