Nukeproof AM Comp or Lapierre Zesty ?

So after the 29 / 26 debate I have decided to take on peoples advice and stick to 26

So now I am looking at the following models

Nukeproof AM Comp

Lapierre Zesty (214 or 314)

I have discounted the Spicy as think 160mm is probably too much for what I do

I currently have an Attack Trail 2007 - great bike, and with 140mm rear I couldn't imagine going for a bike with less

Main riding is at Cannock / FOD trails, along with Wyre Forest and Coed - Y

I do tend to throw it around a bit, and will hit the black features at Cannock, but I'm not flying off of gap jumps or anything like that - I enjoy the downhilly singletrack and do have the occasional off, as I try to push myself - but I also want something that will climb / I can use for races like Bikefest

Within the next 6 months FOD will become my local trail centre, due to moving house - so for this reason I am leaning towards the Nukeproof as I figure it could hack some of the downhill runs there - If I want to start branching out a bit

Are there any other 2012 bikes I should be looking at ??? Norco Stealth 2 is a bit out of my price range

Not really bothered by weight of bike too much, as Im not a serious racer, just for fun

Did look at Rose bikes, but they have sold out of the 140mm 2012 model

Is it worth upgrading the Marin? Are very capable machines.

If you do go new, would you test any first?

You are aware the Nukeproof is 160 front and 150 rear right?
I'd go for the Mega personally, but then I'm just not a Lapierre fan.

bugger ! thanks for pointing that out ! I thought it was the u turn model 115 - 160mm, but its the solo air, so looks like 160 fixed

looks like the lapierre may win out then

Doesn't really make much difference anyway, it's still not going to weigh any less, have trail bike geometry or less travel out back.

You definitely need a bigger bike - you wouldnt want to stick with what you have got if you continue riding the same trails you already do.

The mega is not a heavy bike - 30-32 lbs depending on model the Zesty wont be much lighter at the level you are looking albeit a bit more xc oriented. If you are in the mood for a new bike I would go for the mega and keep the Marin as the Zesty would be a like for like swap - Mega will be good for alpine adventures too.

I would be selling the marin to fund the new bike, am after a new one as it is getting a bit old, and I end up spending £50 on bits for it most months (and as I turn 30 its a bit of an early mid life crisis treat to myself - its now or never as the misses is after kids in a year or 2, so wont have the income)

I have read a lot of Mega reviews and a fair few people are saying that they can easily do an 80km day ride on it, and with the monarch it has settings for riding uphill

However - with no lockout on the front end I am a bit worried it is going to be a bitch to climb on (although I never use the lockout on my current bike on the front end, only on the rear) and I rarely stand up to peddle.

the reason I started looking at the nukeproof is because a couple of guys on the lapierre forum (whre i asked about spicy vs zesty) said that the nukeproof was a better option as it has the downhill ability of the spicy, but better climbing that the zesty due to its seatpost angle

I am open to other suggestions though still, doesnt have to be nukeproof or lapierre

As I said, I want something that I can thrown down the hills, but also climbs relatively well - basically a good trail centre bike, eering towards being thrown about on downhill, than a light spindly xc job that is quicker on the uphill

80 % of the riding will be at trail centres

20% bridleways (week day evenings after work)

I dont ever tend to ride for more than 2 hours / 18 miles on any given day as I normally have my dog with me and this is about his limit

Twice a year I will want something I can do bikefest on, but as this is for fun / fitness and not a serious race it doesnt have to be an xc / race specific bike

Anyway thoughts are very much welcome :)

Can't find any places offering test rides on the nukeproof or lapierre closely

Might sound boring, but what about a Canyon? The Nerve Am has been almost universally praised:

Or with a bit more beef:

The Scott Genius is also worth a look for the adjustability it has.

strive es looks really nice! and with adjusteable travel on the forks maybe a better option than the nukeproof mega - they have sold out though :(

Also assume they dont do a 0% offer like a lot of shops, so would be a credit card job !

having looked at canyon specs and reviews I am pretty much sold

looking very seriously at stretching my budget and getting the Nerve AM8

from comparing the specs this still looks a better option than a reduced zesty at a similar price

so it looks like my choices are:

    Zesty 314 2012 (£1838)

Nerve AM 8 (£1849 delivered) but comes with a reverbI will sell so more like £1649

Specialised Stumpjumper FSR Comp (£1800 + 150 voucher)

is the specialised worth looking at as it is reduced from 2400 ? or is the canyon still a better option

I wonder if anyone on here as ever stuck to their budget!

£200 for a used Reverb? - that might be a bit optimistic, I bought mine new for £165...

well i would put my old reverb into the canyon - as its a 2012 model anyway and only a few months old, so the reverb i would sell would be new - £200 was ballpark too :D

I'd say "as new" but it wouldn't actually be in the box with all original packaging would it?

(actually having never bought a new bike...maybe it would??)

  • And Canyon dont supply there Reverb equipped bikes with the bleed kit and extras that you usually get when buying a Reverb boxed, which i found annoying so selling second hand they dont pull quite as much dollar as a box fresh example

Sounds exactly like what I bought for £165 from Bike-Discount.de - saying that the bleed kit is only £25 from them
