Today's ride, I have noticed a bit of a play in the axis that hold the pedals cranks. One guy said he had a tool and was going to do it there, but he could not find it. ANyway he told me that CRC sells the tools and only cost a couple of quids (apparently it is made of plastic). Could anyone point me to the right tool before i go and buy the wrong one. Bike is a RR 8.1, thanks

EDIT: I think I have found it:

If you have a Shimano external bearing crankset that tool is used to pre load the bearings when you install the crankset. You can not use it to remove play in the bearings if the bearings are worn. Exactly what play is there in the cranks, if its up and down the bearings are shot and you need new ones.

hmmm, yes it is up and down but also front and back. But if this is the right tool i will order it anyway for future use. Bike is still under warranty so it looks like a trip to Decathlon is in order!

The question is what BB/cranks to you have.

If its under warranty take it back. Its a useful tool to have in the tool box for use on Shimano Hollowtech 2 type cranksets, you cant overload the bearings using your fingertips on the tool unlike some of the types that come with a handle. Putting too much preload on hollow tech 2 bearings is fatal you just need to take any play out.

model number is usually printed on the back side of the crank arm around the pedal fastening

Thanks Kieron, will check tomorrow but I will call Decathlon tomorrow and see if they have got the part in stock and take it there to see if I can get a new one if needed. There is a fair amount of play but I don't know if it means that it needs tighten up or replacing. I may as well take advantage of the warranty, Decathlon so far has never denied replacing a faulty part.
