If you can't pedal your bike up a hill, then walking it with your bike isn't going to be any faster.
It sounds like you're just a terrible bike mechanic, my main bike has 2x9 gearing, and it's never dropped the chain. You ineptitude with a spanner doesn't mean that anyone else should limit their bike's ability.0 -

It works for some, not for others. Like rigid forks, hardtails, SPDs etc. Myriad reasons for this: bike choice, fitness, local riding, attitude, riding style etc. not sure why this topic specifically breeds such heated discussion!0 -

DK sounds like he needs a dual ring chain guide - that's what I run on my 2x9 and it keeps my chain in place better than the chain guide on by 1x9 setup (somehow the chain keeps esscaping from the chain guide on my big hit - the gap between the top guide and the bash guard is a couple of mm and yet you hit a cople of successive roots and it jumps out somehow - then I have to stop, split the chain at the powerlink, reloop it - pain in the behind!)Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0

Got a dual ring 2x10 X-Guide. Keeps the chain on the rings, but doesn't stop the big dropping to the little ring. Very much depends on the chain tension though. As I mentioned, slight slack due to wear after a few months and it starts dropping. Shiny new chain set to correct length for a full sus, mechs all serviced, and sure enough it's holding fine now. That's what I did before. Give it a few months and it's slack again and dropping.
But anyway, it's irrelevant as I missed the issue of the OP in the first place which it seems he wonders if he should go single ring because he's always in the granny and thus should he just have the granny alone as a single, right?
And we were getting along fine. I wasn't making it personal, just a debate and me getting the wrong point of the thread and wading in with my reasons for going single rather than his needs, so I'll go away now.0 -
