Hello, Im a rookie mountain bike rider and I have been looking for new tyres to replace my kenda kinetics 26 x 2.35's which I feel are pretty heavy and drag rather a lot. There are several tyres which have caught my eye specifically continental's race kings 2.2., mountain kings II 2.4 and X king 2.4., Im just not sure which ones to go for, these all might be poor tyres and there could be some other tyres im ignoring! Im looking for a pair of tyres that will have less rolling resistance but still be good on the trails and lightweight as well for under £25 ish per tyre, Please help!!

cheers,
Alex

  • For what its worth, I had conti x kings on my Genius. The rear tyre wall took a beating after not a huge amount of riding. The tread was fine but the walls were through to the tube in places. I spotted it on my roof rack on my way to the quantocks so stopped at a bike shop and was restricted to one choice. Specialised purgatory. Dont know much about them but they seem like a much more hard wearing tyre. Reading reviews since I purchased it seem to like it as a tyre also. That said, Maxis get great reviews and you may want to run different size, makes, models front and back.

Depends what version though - are quite a few in the Conti range of each type ie Protection, Black Chilli etc.

I think for my budget I would only be able to get the standard race kings, mountain king 2's and x kings

is not worth buying the standard of any tyre, as they usually use harder compounds, poorer sidewalls and heavy steel beads. Pay a bit more and you get a much better tyre.

would you recommend that I buy foldable tyres instead of rigid tyres then?, I doubt my bike (carrera centos) would warrant any better!

Absolutely! The best upgrade you can make for the money by far.

thank you, i shall look at foldable tyres from now on then, just one more thing, these tyres seems quite unique and are reasonably light, have you heard anything about them? http://www.wiggle.co.uk/charge-splashba ... -mtb-tyre/
