Hi,
I bought a pair of wheels and a new shimano 8 speed cassette. However the cassete is wobbly on the laserdisc hub.
Am i right in thinking on this setup I will need a spacer on the cassette and if so what size
Many Thanks,
Jonny

The wheels are?
Unlikely to need a spacer.
So the cassette is on you just can't tighten it up?0 -
They are laserdisc trial wheels hardly used, and laserdisc hubs the hub feels tight but wobbles thus thinking it needs a spacer0
-
In what way does it wobble? is the cassette loose on the freehub body?0
-
its a side to side wobble they feel tight on the freehub0
-
If they are tight on then it sounds like the freehub bearings. Can you get hold of (either) and physically feel play?0
-
makes me wonder if its the cassette that is buggered even though its brand new, i did read on a forum that it could be a spacer issue apparantly its the same on the mavic wheels ??0
-
silly question how do i check for play lol what do i hold, also are bearing easy to change0
-
If the cassette is not moving against the freehub then it is on tight. If you get hold of the wheel, them try and move the freehub body and that wobbles, then the bearings could be loose 9though a little play is normal).
or is it only noticable when the wheel is spinning?0 -
By sideways do you mean it slides backwards and forwards along the freehub and not actually wobbly?I don't do smileys.

When it's tight there's no play but when spinning it likes moves side to side like a buckled wheel but not as bad
Thanks for all ur help here0 -
It does not move one bit on the hub0
-
Normal, is oscillation due to the parts not been quite concentric. happens on a lot of them.0

Is normal (if no freehub play in the bearings, hard to tell there)0
-
Would a better video shot help0
-
No, you need to find out if the freehub body is loose/has play. Grab it and move it up and down/in and out. Does it have play? If it is smooth on the bearing, the 'wobbling' is normal.0

feels solid mate0

Just ignore it then.I don't do smileys.

Right guys I have
e figured out the problem on the back of the cassete there are two pins/plugs that go through the cassette now there is an hole for another one but I don't think there should be a pin in there but when UTStarcom tight on the hub it's not straight so I don't know if its a faulty cassette or something missing lol0 -
Iirc, those pins are not needed, the splines should stop the sprockets from turning, and the pins hold it all in place when not in place.0
-
There in so can't see how to remove them they go straight through0
-
You're not making sense, they are not there and now they are.0
-
There are 2 pins in place and one hole where one shoold go thus when on hub it's not sitting true0
-
Those pins serve no purpose really, once fitted the freehub splines stop It from twisting0
-
Yep I understand but I can't take them out but that's why it won't sit straight tho when tightened0
-
So are the the big gap and little splines all in line so you can slot on to the freehub ?0
-
Many of my SRAM cassettes have two pins, and one seemingly missing. As has been said, when tightened up the whole thing stays in place, you could run every cog loose.
I can't see any problem at all here.0
