I am just a normal rider , club rides etc etc . No inspirations to race but would like to start on serious sportives next year.

Just got married and losing my current bike storage which has give me the opportunity to sell a few bikes to have one super special road bike. Budget around 3k . Currently ride a trek 5200.

Open to ideas really? I know 3k is going to buy something way over my needs but why not I say, I would like something new (never had a new bike!!) and will grow old a classic unlike me!!

My only boxes to tick are compact gearing, more slack not to racey , a brand with heritage

Looked at loads of different bikes , One that really caught my eye was a Wilier Grand turismo 2012 shop built with the red/white/blue , Sram rival with Sram s60 wheelset for 3.3k ?

Also been offered a Cannondale supersix evo mod with Scram red but with budget £150 wheels? for 3k

Any other ideas ?

Cheers

for sportives look for something like a high end specialized roubaix or trek domane, or similar

Best bet is a 2012 model with at least ultegra or possibly dura-ace for that budget

Specialized Roubix Pro with sram red for just over 3 grand here

I have one with dura ace drivetrain-and it is superb. Not sure how the sram spec compares, but not a bad price I dont think- cheaper than the wilier with a groupset 2 levels higher......

And if you want to stay married, don't actually tell your wife how much a bike costs. Just tell her that you have "saved" £800 or whatever. :D

    hmmmmm

what made you pick your steed?

Been out again today having a look round, The thing I am struggling with is at best you can have a look or even worse get told they can order it. But not been able to jump on them dont give you that ooooowww I like that feel when you test drive a new car? :?

Todays tasty treats I liked was a Cervelo s2 with di2 with semi training wheels for £2999. Dare I say it ....A machine that is 110% more than I will ever need but not really pleasing to the eye? :? (felt pretty weighty too, upgrade wheels would sort that shop man said)

The Kuota range was rather tasty too :D A nice Kebel would be in the price range

Now far be it for me to discourage somebody purchasing a new bike, but whats wrong with your current Trek. If you can work out what the Trek doesnt give you or you want different to the Trek it might help you in your selection.

Similar position to you a while ago, albeit different set of circumstances ( I got knocked off by a car and the impact destroyed my bike ) I ended up with a Look 586 that I got for slightly more than your 3K budget.

TBH at this sort of level theres no such thing IMHO as a bad bike, its more about getting one that fits you and suits your requirements.

I dont think you would be disappointed with Willier or the Cervelo you have been looking at.

I dont think that you need a serious bike for a sportive I've seen all sorts on the ones I've done, hacks, £500 starter bikes right up to carbon / titanium exotica.

Nothing really wrong with the trek apart from its a little too small (52cm) , I am 5ft 9" 32" inside leg. Even with spacers it currently has quite a drop from seat to bars, The chainset is 53/39 too which around the cotswolds can be tough on the steeper stuff (normally ok unless super steep) but be nice to be able to spin if I want to rather than track standing
Also it is a super mint us postal bike that I dont want to mess around with (fit compact etc ). and like I said before I know I dont NEED to spend the money but have the opportunity and would like to treat myself.
