Fox Float R Rear Shock

Hi guys. I am considering upgrading the Fox Float (basic model) shock which came on my bike. The basic Float on my bike has very little adjustments. All I can do is adjust the air spring pressure. If I have the pressure at a level where I use the travel effectively, the bob when pedalling is really bad. So I run it at high pressure, meaning I may as well ride a hard tail.

I am thinking about the 'Fox Float R' as this is within my budget.
What are your opinions on this shock please? Is the pro-pedal effective? If you have negative opinions, give reasons please. Don't just say it sucks.

The alternative is the DT Swiss M 212. So if any of you know about this shock, please advise. Or I could wait a while and see if I can rustle up some more cash.

Before you give other options or suggestions as to what to buy, I have £200 of vouchers to spend for a well known online retailer based in Northern Ireland and require a 200x51 or 200x50 shock. So save your breath/fingers please.

Thoughts please?

  • The fox float R does not have pro pedal. The RP2 and RP23 have pro pedal.

I have a float R on my Trance X3. I find it perfectly fine. Minimal pedal bob, it has rebound adjust. I ride trail centres, peak district etc. and I cant find fault with it.

It does. You just can't turn it off.
  • Thanks guys. Rapid_Donkey - I am concerned about pedal bob as that is the big problem at the moment, so thanks. Bennett - absolutely right. Pro-pedal is there, but there is no control over it.

i have a float r and it does bob alot when you put the power down, i'd probably look for an rp2 or rp23 if that's an issue for you :D
  • What Bike is it on? This will have the biggest effect on pedal bob... might be better to go with one with a lock out for the uphill

I had a FloatR on the Wolfridge, with "medium" propedal preset, and the bike barely bobbed at all.
I sent it away to TFTuned for a full service, and asked them to reduce, or disable the ProPedal. Now it bobs a bit more, but has far more traction and feels a lot more compliant.

Either get it tuned to the bike, or get a RP23.
  • Or a Monarch.
