Bottom bracket suggested fix

Hi,
Looking for some bottom bracket advice please........
I have a 3 month old Giant Defy 1 and the bottom bracket is squeaking. I've had it back to the retailer and he returned it a couple of days later saying it was the saddle (I had checked this and knew it wasn't a saddle issue). I tried it again and have again contacted him to confirm the problem still exists. He has now told me that Giant advised him to glue in the bottom bracket (push in type of bottom bracket). This does not sound like a reasonable fix to me but I'd appreciate any advice.

  • I'm no expert but I wouldn't have thought gluing the bearings in would be a good idea - that might make it very difficult to remove them if they need to be replaced in the future.

What BB system is this? BB30 or somthing else. Locktite can work but I would first eliminate all other cuases, pedal threads, chainring bolts, rear Q/R skewers e.t.c.

It's a Giant so will use BB86. Use of loctite is the fix for the squeaking noise that bb86 can produce if it is indeed the BB.

    Thanks all,
My concern is that the creaking began about a month after the bike was bought and so I figured maybe the BB is faulty and should be replaced rather than glued in.
    Thanks again for the advice!

replacing the BB (if it is the BB) bearing may not solve the problem as the if it is the BB the issue will be down to the I.D tolerance of the BB shell and the O.D tolerance of the bearing. Can't do much if the BB shel is abit too large.

However don't assume it is the BB! everythings else should be checked first. Coppaslip on pedal threads should be renewed and all other possible sources of creaks checked. On my MTB a had a creak recently. Went through everthing to find it was the rear Q/R needed a dab of oil on the cam.

Thanks again for the continued advice.
Should have said (but wanted to keep it short) - If I push and pull laterally on the pedals it produces the creak. The pedals and crank etc have been checked and don't seem to be the problem. The bike was originally collected for me and cycled the 15 miles to my home. When I went for a cycle I noticed the crank arm was loose (which I immediately tightened) but I'm concerned this may have caused some wear and consequently the creak.

FWIW Loctite 641 is a semi-permanent engineering adhesive designed specifically for this kind of job - all press-fit bottom brackets are notorious for creaking (I have one too). Applying the 641 will no way impair the ability to fit a new bottom bracket either, the adhesive bond is relatively light.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Kind of why I am not a fan of press fit BB's dispite the advantages.
