Best buy from Evans for around £550

Hi I have a voucher for £550 at Evans, can anyone make any recommendations?
I do a daily commute (only a couple of miles a day). Weekends I go out with my wife on her dutch bike and my son in his child seat or trailer. Then every now and then I get to go out on my own, then I am a little more adventurous.
I am open to suggestions on bike type, make, model, etc... I previously had a Genesis Core 26.1 because it has a low standover height, and I have short legs (29" inside leg)! I am 5' 10", 13st 13lb, and a bit out of shape (but I am working on that).

Im looking around a similar price and on evans also for my new purchase. To be honest you cant go wrong with the Rockhopper but thats at the top end of your budget.

Hi, I went in yesterday and had a look at a few.
I liked the look of the Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc 2013 (29er), but I was also looking at the Norco Charger 6.1, Norco Charger 9.1 (29er), or do I just get another Genesis Core 26.1.
But I have been told on another post that the Hardrocks are rubbish, and generally all 29ers ar bad.
The Norco 6.1 felt like a good fit because of its very low standover height.0 -
These are the bikes that fall within range. I can possibly stretch to a little more if the bike is worth it!0

I'm a Rockhopper man (or used to be) but that would be way down my list.
I'd prob go for the GT Avalanche, Norco Charger, Scott Scale..in that order. But having never even sat on any of those bikes let alone ridden them that's purely my own personal choice just from a quick look online"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

Hardrocks are very poor value (I had one as my first bike), Rockhoppers are a bit overpriced as well.
Saying all 29ers are bad is wrong, I don't like them personally but lots of people love them and they seem to be doing better than 26" wheel bikes in XC racing. 29ers seem to be less good value than 26" wheel bikes.
The Norco looks like good value to me. Good fork and reasonable transmission for the price

I like the look of the Kona Steely... http://www.evanscycles.com/products/kon ... e-ec026543
Has deore shifters and rear mech instead of the Alvivo on the Norco.
Norco is definately more XC though, Steely seems to be half way to a hardcore hardtail looking at the spec!
Steely will be heavier I would imagine.0 -

Good call. If I had to pick one of those bikes it'd probably be that one!"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

So general consensus is the Norco? 6.1 or 9.1?0

Ones a 29er and ones got 26" wheels. Best to go to a store and try and get a little ride around the car park or at least have a sit on them"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

The Pinnacle http://www.evanscycles.com/products/pin ... e-ec035896 isn't bad and you do get £100 of accesories with it (Ok £60 worth if you bought from wiggle/CRC/Merlin)....Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Was looking for a cheap hard tail as a supplement to the big rig and gave up with Evans. The frames are fine but the specs they're providing for the money are shockingly poor. Poor value for money on components which is where it all counts. It's not just Evans though, it's the 'new' bike industry as a whole especially in the lower end of the market.
Anyway, point is, for the money and sticking with Evans, go for the best spec of components possible, stick to a hard tail. Also pop into your local store and see if they have any special deals on last year's models. Can often be a better spec for same or less money.0
