700c x 23 Shrader tubes?

Hi all,

I have a bit of a dilemma. My road bike has 700c x 23 size tyres and the rims take schrader valves.
My problem is, I cannot find (and I have searched for hours and hours online and in LBS's) cannot find, 700c x 23 (or anything below 25) tubes with schrader valves (you can get them in USA but not UK).

So my question is this, can I get away with putting a 700c x25/32 tube inside my 23 tyres?
I would really rather not buy adapters and change over to presta tubes as all my pumps are schrader and I prefer them (even if they are a bit "less classy")

thanks,

really...just buy a presta tube

Presta tubes work on any rim and you'd have to have some weird pump than couldn't be used with a presta tube....

I have a 240v digital automatic car tyre inflator that is a joy to use (schrader only) also my portable manual bycycle pump is believe it or not schrader only in its current state.

Worst case I can get a presta tube, but as you can see, will be much more convenient if I can fit a 700c x 25/32 tube inside my tyres without problem.

  • Ho does that work? does it go in the rim or on the pump.

Almost all cycle pumps have the ability to be both presta and shraeder. See here.ConvertingAPumpSmall.jpg

Just screw it on to the valve when you are using the pump, then remove afterwards.

Ok but I still have to buy adapters to reduce the size of the hole in the rim to accommodate presta valves...
This could be a problem on my bike as the valve hole in the rim is cut into the middle of a peak in the rim, so isnt a flat circle.
Then fiddle about with adapters and such like on the valve itself.

It really would be a a lot simpler if the 700c x 25/32 shrader tube is going to be perfectly fine (this is what I dont know).

Another option I suppose is buying wider tyres. 28's maybe.

Oh don't worry about that, I don't race, I just cycle to work to get fit, my bike is heavy as **** anyway. The way I see it, the heavier the bike is the more effort I put in and the fitter I get. (Also saves buying expensive lightweight parts :P )

This should generate a dozen "NOOOO's" but anyway!

I've used, at times, various wrongly sized tubes (in 27inch inner tubes in 700c tyres) and not noticed any problems - I tend to change bikes more often than rucksacks so if I need an inner tube from the bag, it might not be an exact fit (not that I need them often). Inner tubes are stretchy and bendy so I tend not to worry about them. A bigger inner tube is going to just mean that you have a thicker, heavier layer of rubber supporting your tyre. Aside from being an unneccessary extra weight, I can't see any reason why the fatter tubes should be a problem.

Thanks mate, I've ordered one of the MAXXIS ones but very good to know I can grab a 700c x 25/32 from a LBS in an emergency if needed :D

so to summarise, basically everyone on this thread (and thus the font of all good advice) recommended to buy a presta tube but you bought a shraeder one anyway.

I would have been happy to take your advice to buy a presta tube if I had too but I found a tube the correct size for my bike in the end.

Please forgive me for buying the correct size and fitment tube for my wheels and tyres. :?
