Over the last 18 months, since I started cycling and joined this forum, I have gone from not knowing how to change a tyre to owning a veritable workshop of tools and equipment.

Today I singlehandedly stripped my bike to the bare frame and then rebuilt it including a complete new Groupset, all new cables (Gore Ride-on sealed system) and bartape etc. Also put new wheels on it (Mavic Ksyrium Elites).

Not only do I feel amazing about having managed it without a single disaster (it took me 6 hours and i quadrouple checked EvERYTHING before cutting / fixing!!) but the bike is like NEW - it feels massively lighter and more nippy - really is like riding a new bike! Totally unrecognisable from before.

Before:
105 Triple (5600 series)
Horrible grey coloured cheaply stock cables
Heavy (but bombproof) RS30 wheels

After:
105 Compact (5700 series - cables routed under the bartape)
Sexy white routed Gore Ride-on sealed cables
Ksyrium Elite wheels

Just wanted to boast!!

And to say thanks to everyone on these fora who have contributed bit by bit to my knowledge of bike maintenance!

Oh, and even better day as I weighed myself - 78kg - lightest ever (pre-cycling weight was 110kg)!!

  • Come back & boast when you've built the wheels too!
For extra points, build the frame also!

Great stuff mate - good feeling when you can build the bike up from a bare frame.

Problem is - if it creaks now......... its all your fault!! :)
