First crash today

Coming down a hill and couldn't scrub the speed off quick enough, had the option of going over the handlebars or throwing myself at an angle onto the grass bank. Took the bank but still hit it quite hard. First reaction was ouch, then to check the bike. Rode home but then my collarbone started hurting, a trip to A&E for an xray didn't show any break but it still bl**dy kills. Anyone had similar?

Bike is fine by the way.

Lol, slight scuff on the saddle which is nothing and a scuff to the left side bar end. Pretty lucky considering.

The initial lesson of your first crash is too survive it. Glad you did that. The second is to learn from the experience. Be safe out there....

I had a similar experience on a hill near me a couple of days back. Was coming down at a steady 30mph when an absolute arsehole decided he'd drive out in front of me. As you do, i slam on the brakes and try to avoid him, in doing so i hit a small pothole and go flying off into a hedge and lamppost. Luckily only my right hand hit the lamppost as i swerve to the left of it into the hedge. Turns out i've got three broken fingers on the right hand. Very lucky i managed to swerve enough and not hit it head on. As it happened so quickly i didn't even think about clocking his reg, and there is no cctv on the hill.

I f**king hate some drivers. That's me off the road for a good few weeks.
  • Ouch, so they just drove off?

Had mine xrayed and its just a disrupted ac joint. Already feeling better, much less pain and I'm getting more movement in it every day. Hope to be back out on the bike next week.

Yep, no regard to the fact i'm riding at the same speed every other car is going, and i bet he wouldn't have pulled out on a care doing that speed! Ah that's not too bad then, could've been a lot worse.

That's terrible, shame you couldn't get the reg.

Hope you're making a good recovery.

I had a big 'off' coming down the Cormet de Roselend on a cycling holiday 6 weeks ago - caught the edge of a pothole, which put me into a cliff - resulting in a broken left collar bone & cycling helmet, a night in a French hospital & the loss of 4 days riding. It could have been a lot worse!!!

Even more painful was the damage to my bike - the frame is cracked & now has to be replaced at a cost of £1,500, after the 'crash damage policy' discount from Trek.

I managed to get out for the first time this week - can' believe how much fitness I've lost, but was great to be out cycling again!!

I had a similar crash back last christmas. Was riding down a not very steep hill at slow speed due to the roads being extremely icy. Next thing i know my brakes are locked but not bringing me to any sort of stop. Good job another car wasn't coming from the other way as I could not turn as I crossed the road and fell sideways into a grass bank covered in snow not really hurting myself. Funny thing is the hill got me again the next week, my back wheel came sideways and brought me to the ground hard. Just learn from your mistakes and be glad you have only damaged your bike.
