clunking sound from crankarm or crankset

Apologies in advance if this one has been answered/discussed elsewhere.

I occasionally hear a 'clunking' sound from either the crankarm or crankset on the chain ring side of the bike. The clunking seems to coincide with going up hills or starting off from traffic lights in a high (ish) gear; it never happens when cruising along.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what might be causing this? The bike is a bit middle aged nowadays - a ridgeback genesis hybrid that i bought second hand around ten years ago.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Loose crank? If so will be fubared very soon.

  • thanks. would be a shame to be in possesion of a fubared bike especially if i am astride it when the fubaring begins. For the sake of clarity, if you have a moment, would you suggest getting it into the bikeshop ASAP?

Fubared - farked up beyond all reasonable repair. Check if the crank is a bit loose on the taper.
Or take it into a bike shop.

    Nope.
Once the crank loosens a bit (if that's what's wrong) it will destroy the arm very quickly. Assuming it's square taper should just need a tighten - a 17?or 18? or so socket.
