Dolan Mythos Frame Sizing

Hi,

I firstly apologise for another frame size question. I'm about to order a Dolan Mythos but having quite a dilemma with the size of frame. I emailed Dolan on Friday with no reply and called them today and told they would phone back but i received no phone call. I'm currently riding a frame with a 55cm top tube but i feel it's a bit too big for me. I'm 5 foot 8 with an inseam of 31". Looking at the Mythos geometry i can see two sizes which i think would be suitable, the 44cm and the 48cm. The 44cm frame has an effective top tube of 53cm and the 48cm frame has an ETT of 54.5cm. I have used the competitive cyclist fit calculator just as a rough guide with these results:

Measurements (cm)
Inseam: 79
Trunk: 67
Forearm: 25
Arm: 67
Thigh: 58
Lower Leg: 58.5
Sternal Notch: 147
Total Body Height: 173

The Competitive Fit (cm)
Seat tube range c-c: 51.2 - 51.7
Seat tube range c-t: 52.7 - 53.2
Top tube length: 53.4 - 53.8
Stem Length: 10.2 - 10.8
BB-Saddle Position: 77.9 - 79.9
Saddle-Handlebar: 48.7 - 49.3
Saddle Setback: 1.4 - 1.8

The Eddy Fit (cm)
Seat tube range c-c: 52.4 - 52.9
Seat tube range c-t: 53.9 - 54.4
Top tube length: 53.4 - 53.8
Stem Length: 9.1 - 9.7
BB-Saddle Position: 77.1 - 79.1
Saddle-Handlebar: 49.5 - 50.1
Saddle Setback: 2.6 - 3.0

The French Fit (cm)
Seat tube range c-c: 54.1 - 54.6
Seat tube range c-t: 55.6 - 56.1
Top tube length: 54.6 - 55.0
Stem Length: 9.3 - 9.9
BB-Saddle Position: 75.4 - 77.4
Saddle-Handlebar: 51.2 - 51.8
Saddle Setback: 2.1 - 2.5

I plan to start racing next year however i do enjoy a long day in the saddle so would like to have a reasonably comfortable position for long miles as well.

Any help would be much appreciated as i would like to get the bike out on the road before the winter bike and mudguards come out to play.

  • As far as I know the mythos is the same frame used as the Planet X SL pro..

I'm the same size as yourself and could have gone for either size. I'd say a medium frame with no spacers under the stem to get the position a bit lower rather than a small frame stacked up with spacers. A lot depends on how flexible you are and what you find as comfortable with your unique body dimensions. It's worth noting that the small PX frame I had only had one set of bosses for bottle cages, I always use two now. One for a bottle and one for tools, rather than a saddle bag..

Best way to be sure is try for size.
  • where abouts are you? i have one in a 48 and to be honest its a bit too big and think i am going to sell :( shame as i really like the bike. Im a bit shorter than yourself and think i should have got the 44.

Well i run a drop of around 8cm on my current bike but to get this i need to use a negative stem and no spacers. I'd rather not use a negative stem as i find it ugly (i know that looks have nothing to do with fit but i like to look pro and fast even if i can't move fast) That is my only worry with the bigger size. I had read this on PX's website but there is nothing saying on the Dolan website that the small doesn't have 2 sets of bosses. That's the thing, i'm in Glasgow so i can't travel to the Dolan showroom to try one out and i can't locate a dealer so i'm having to guess which would suit more.

I'm in Glasgow but i'd rather buy new. Thanks anyway

Has anyone seen/used/owned a small 44cm Dolan Mythos? If so does it have 2 sets of bottle bosses?

You could try Dooley's in Paisley - I bought a Mythos a couple of years ago from there, unfortunately it's since been stolen by some c*nt who, if I ever see them on it will be beaten badly to death, otherwise i'd let you try it for size.

They're big roadies in there & were really helpful, they ordered in a 44 & 48 for me to try, then sold both before i'd decided, but then ordered both in again & I opted for the 44cm in the end with a 100mm stem - i'm 5'7" & usually ride frames with a 52.5-53.5 TT for reference. From memory the frame felt quite long & low, so if you're looking for all-day comfort you might want to try both sizes before deciding, maybe also try the bigger size combined with a slightly shorter stem to see if the extra head-tube height suits you better than the smaller frame with a longer stem.

Can't remember if it had 1 or 2 sets of bottle bosses - sorry!

    Hope that helps!

I've got a 56cm Dolan Mythos. 2 sets of bottle bosses.

The frame is long and low. I've been playing around with my saddle height and have lowered it from a couple of cms from where I'd usually have it and am finding it very comfortable.

Sorry to hear that John. It must say something about the appeal of the bike though. The main sponsor of my club is actually Dooleys so i've been in a couple of times but nothing caught my eye. Although if i do buy one and you happen to see me out on it please refrain from beating me to death.

What height are you roughly? The frame seems to be low and long which is perfect for the 48cm but if it is the case that it's low the 44cm might have far too much drop for my back and neck to handle.

Haha - don't worry, mine had a few subtle (but obvious to me) changes ;-)

I checked the Dolan website & Dooleys were down as the nearest distributer so I just popped in & asked about them - they didn't hold any stock at the time but were happy to order a few in, sounds like you'd be better trying both for size before committing, good luck!

I think i'm going to pull the trigger on the 48. Hopefully i can get a decent drop with all the spacers but if not i'll slam the stem. Thanks for all the help guys.

Inch shorter than you and use a 44cm as a winter bike. Its a good fit with a 11cm stem .
It’s the most beautiful sport in the world but it’s governed by ***ts who have turned it into a crock of ****.

Just out of interest, does it have two sets of bottle bosses?

It does. Only able to get a 500ml bidon on the seat tube though!
If you want I can take a pic for you?

A pic of the frame would be brilliant as i'm curious of the geometry on the small! However i managed to speak to Terry today and he recommends the medium too so i'm pretty much settled
