safest place for mobile phone on ride

Hello all,
Where is the safest place to keep your mobile phone on an MTB ride? I normally keep it in my back pack, but it does bounce around a little there and if I was to crash and land on my back it could get damaged. Shorts pocket is a option but again if I crash it may be vulnerable there.
Thanks
Dan

Backpack. tucked away, in a bit of towel rag or something if you're worried about the screen getting scratched.
Carried mine in my backpack on rides for the past 5 years, had many offs and still to break a phone.0 -
Top pocket of my bag, it's a slightly padded pocket and the phone is in a hard case, stays in there along with my car keys, if I take my wallet that goes on top of it to pad it a bit.The Northern Monkey wrote:Carried mine in my backpack on rides for the past 5 years, had many offs and still to break a phone.
Very much this though, yet to damage it.0 -
Hip pocket, never fallen on anything that's damaged or scratched it, plus if I fall on it whilst it's there, a damaged phone will be the least of my concernsSpecialised Camber Comp 2011

Outside small pocket on my Mule - inside sandwich bag to protect from elements/scratching. Fallen on my back a few times and only made a couple of inadvertent phone calls - no broken phones.Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0

Must remember to put mine in a poly bag. Amazed it survived fridays ride at penmachno. It was in the middle of my fanny pack (round the front), under neath my waterproof jacket and was still soaking wet.0

But fanny pack - seriously?0 -
But even better, it was pi55ing it down all the while we were there, never been so wet! Was ace though.
Can't beat a nice little fanny pack for those essentials0 -

Use one of them too, if I need to take more stuff, but for short rides, bottle on frame, tube/pump/bits n bobs and a snack or 2, the fanny is perfect.
On the flip side, could be considered gay if you've not tried a fanny0 -

Had forgotten until you just reminded me

Cant, need it to track my ride on Strava.
Sounds like some sort of case and a better padded area of my backpack is the answer then, as long as it don't interfere with the GPS.0 -
Use my previous 'smartphone' with a PAYG simcard. 15 quid has lasted 8 months so far as I only use it for emergencies. Has GPS, crappy old processor in it means battery lasts for days (without GPS on) rather than hours and if I trash it I'm not too worried.
Last 2 proper offs I had on my own I'm not sure how long it would have taken me to get it out of my pack  (1 separated shoulder, 1 dislocated ribs...)0 -
One of the many reasons I don't own a smart phone, bugger going in to your bag after a ride to see the screens cracked or something!
My old brick rattles around all day in my bag.0 -

Seriously, if you're treating your phone with such kid gloves, then get a garmin runkeeper watch or something like that for about 60-90 quid off amazon, or cheaper on Ebay.0 -
Keep mine in my saddle bag and it is fine0

Ive got a camelbak mule, phone pocket on that is pretty good, well padded.
Also, if you a tracking rides, you ever thought of one of those armband iphone holders, turned so its on the inside of your arm, that should protect if a bit if you fall. (or is that a bit chavvy?)0 -
Chest pocket in something padded and waterproof0

Safest place?...in the phone/camera pocket on the camelbak
Most practical place?...side pocket of shorts :-/"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes
