So got a Giant Trance X, top shock mount bushing is worn and needs replacing.
Been on TFtuned to find the mount kid needed for it, see can get the tool needed to do it for £20 too, just wondering
if anyone knows how much an LBS would charge to do the job? Working out if it would be cheaper to just buy the tool and do it myself? Also if anyone has done it before how easy a job is it?

Yeah, just let me cross reference my extensive list of all service prices for all LBS across all parts of the country.

Why not go and ask them?

sorry, I don't mean to ask a silly question, I was just looking for a rough ball park figure, i.e is it going to less than £20 or more than £20. i don;t expect anyone to know exact figures for any specific shop!

Could be anything. Some LBS will try it on and charge you double what they should and some will charge less than you'd expect. How much would you be willing to pay for it?

can get the mount kit and the tool from tftuned delivered for £38, so I'd be willing to pay around the £35 mark or so including parts, though I'd be tempted to still buy the tftuned kit as its meant to be superior. which would mean around £20 for labour.

Take the shock in and it takes about 14 seconds, so whatever their minimum charge is.

You can get the tool off ebay for about a tenner and as many bushes for the same amount. Do it yourself, it's dead easy.

  • I charge £10 + the cost of the bushes.
Seeing as the Trance X only has one bush, that'd be £12.50 in total.

ok, I'll ring up a couple of LBS and get a check on their prices as it's sounding like it could be quite reasonable. In terms of the mount kit itself, is it worth paying more for TFtuned's heavy duty supposedly longer lasting kit? Or will a standard cheap kit do the job just fine

  • It depends how bad it is really. If it's completely worn out, you might need the fitting hardware as well, so while it's being ordered in, go for the HD one, if the play is only slight & it's lasted reasonably well up to now (how old is the existing one?) Then just go for the standard, as the shop will most likely have it in stock.

Not sure if it's too late but it might be worth going for the enduro needle bearing kits - here - it seems that they're a really worthwhile improvement, as discussed here.

I've just ordered mine, shipping was $12, should cost £28 in total. Let's see how long they take to arrive :D

If it's just a bushing, you don't need a new mount kit, all you need is the bushing. Honestly, do it yourself. Including the cost of the tool, it'll cost you about the same. If you ever have to do it again, it'll cost you the price of a bushing (peanuts). It's not exactly difficult.

  • should replace the bushing and the mount kit though tbh.

Otherwise the new bushing is less likely to last as long.

Not really, unless the bushing is REALLY worn, there's no need to replace the mounting hardware.
