Wheel question?

I have been offered some wheels by a friend at a good price as he has just upgraded and his old wheels are lighter than mine.
My question is this, he uses a 10 speed cassette and I only use a 8 speed, will my cassette work on these wheels? Would I need to buy a spacer or something to take up any slack on the splined part that taks the sprockets?
I can't just try them as we live at opposite sides of the country now so we would need to start ending them via couriers etc.
Any help appreciated.

If its Shimano (and you are not 8 speed Dura Ace) then yes - The 10 speed will have had a spacer between the cassette and the hub but afaik you don't need this for 8 speed.0

Ah, can I barge in please?
I run a 10 speed Shimano cassette on a 2007 Ksyrium wheel, and I have just bought some 2011 Ksyrium wheels. Will I be able to swap the cassette from old to new? Is it something I can do myself (with a few tools)?
Thanks.

Yes. All you need is a chain whip (like a filter wrench) a cassette tool to undo the lock ring and (from memory) a 24mm socket to attach to the cassette tool.
Very simple job, about 5 mins in total.Allez Triple (hairy with mudguards) - FCN 4
