Pedals - double sided speedplay or time vs other road pedals

I am in a rather strange position where I have different pedals (and shoes) for my 2 bikes. Shimano MTB for the commuting Allez Elite and Shimano SPD SL road pedals on my Cannondale.
Given that I live in London I am keen to have double sided as I find the one sided road pedals a real pain to clip in and out of - I have been doing it for a while and the double sided are still my preference. That said, once I get riding the road pedals feel miles better.
I would like to be in a position where I have one 'type' of pedals and one pair of shoes which work on both bikes.
I have looked at the double sided options and have come down to Speedplay and Time Atac. I am by no means a 'serious racer' and feel that the Speedplay may be a bit too much for my needs.
Not sure if using the Time Atac makes any material performance difference for the amateur cyclist? I am guessing not.
Any views would be much appreciated.
Cheers

I've used Speedplay for 12 years now and wouldn't go back. Also R*bb*e are doing them at silly money at the moment bout 88 quid for Stainless. Bargain.0
