Hello,

Looking at both of these but finding it hard to find out what the real differences are between the two?

M595:

M596:

I really like the looks of the M596 over the M595 and it's cheaper (But more expensive retail) what's the differences functionally?

I just got the m596's from merlin as they were cheapest.

Came with plenty of cable for my XL frame and with pads. They were ready to go.

Also had a handy insert to pop in the brakes if you take the wheels off (little things, i know  )

I can adjust the reach of the lever on mine but dont think you can on the 595's. Also i'm led to believe the 595's dont have 'servowave' but the 596's do.

For what its worth, mine are very good. look nice and stop well. They attach to yourbars with a hinged single piece design which is nice too.

Using them, I went from 2 finger braking on everything to just 1 finger easily being enough. Thoroughly reccomended by me.

Sounds good, thanks for the information.

What's your weight like and how is the stopping power? (I'm 98kg need something that stops well) Also what color are the levers exactly? It's hard to know the exact colors on the pic, are they dark silver/grey?

Another edit: What Size rotors you using also?

The 596 are the newer models, are better and for the difference in price, get them. They will stop you.

Im 6'4" and weigh 17stone (god knows what that is in Kgs)

I use a 203mm rotor on the front & 180mm on the back.

The brakes stop me really well. Feathering the front to decelerate or grabbing both for big stops/skids.

I don't think any brake would stop me 'quickly' but these are certainly alot quicker than my last, and better than my pals who have Avid Juicy 3's and are lighter than me.

Lastly, theyre 100% black. the images often show a silver cap on the brake but mine dont have this.

Ok good information, your heavier than me. (I'm 15.4 stone) so looks like I may get them, but the M595 look tempting only £30 at merlins for one! But will get the 596's.

I'm guessing they won't work with 200mm rotor on front and I'll have to get a 203mm?

They will work but you may need a new mount to fit them to. I had to buy a new mount to fit the front brake calipers to my forks. Was a few quid in my LBS. Back one went straight on the old mount.

I have a front mount for the 200mm rotor isi, (works with Juicy 3) would that not just work?

I guess maybe good to get new adapters and rotors with the brake set though so everything is nice and new from the go.

I hear they are easy to set up also, have you encountered any rotor rub at all?

I got the m596 from merlin about 3 weeks ago. fitted no problems, 180 rotors front a rear. no rotor rubs. bedded in ok and are working great

Thanks man looks likely I'll defo get them unless some black XT's come up cheap somewhere but doubtful.

Do you reckon it's worth trying to set the front up with my 200mm rotor or will it not work and I need a 203? (I have 200mm mount and rotor)

Hmm seen this SLX front now:
    http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/m ... kes-1.html

Deore M596 or SLX M665 ? (For front)

I can get the front and pick up the rear elsewhere.

I ordered the SLX, after reading they seem to have more power which is what I need, but I also have SLX gear elsewhere so will almost have SLX groupset with the SLX brakes bar the hubs and shifters. (Just have to get a SLX rear next week)

They're the 2011 model you can get the 2013 version (M675) or an extra £10 from Rose.

I just put a set on one of my bikes. Very impressive!

Yeah I had a look at rose before hand, however funds are tight and the Deore and 2011 SLX prices are my maximum limit currently.

Even £20 more is pushing things as things are already tight, as need to add £5 or so for delivery from Rose and possibly add that twice if ordering front and rear separately. Which is what I need to do currently as can't afford to get both brakes in one sum at the moment, not sure if Rose do free delivery just seen price around a fiver?, when adding two deliveries it works out to be around £30 more altogether for the 2013 SLX, worth it I'm sure but funds are to tight ( get free delivery from Merlin & CRC)
