Did I do something wrong today?

I was out on a ride today and whilst on the lanes, I caught up to a cycle club that looked to have a number of new riders taking part. I said hello to the guys at the back of the bunch and stayed with them but the speed they were riding was slower than my average on the ride. I was feeling good and didn't want my time to be affected so after about half a mile I over took the bunch. When I reached the front I heard one of the riders shout "it's a club run!" as I went past.

I didn't respond at the time but its been annoying me since which is why I am posting this message. My question is should I have riden with the bunch until we went our separate ways or should I have overtook them? What's the general view?

  • Sounds like a bruised ego to me.
    Why would you not overtake?

If you aren't part of the club then no problem. They can't expect people that happen to be riding the same route to sit with them the whole time, if you want to ride faster than they are, feck 'em and go for it.
  • I'm fairly new to cycling myself so still getting the hang of the etiquette but I didn't do anything dangerous just wanted to get past at my own pace. I wasn't setting any records by any means just wanted to maintain progress.

I'd tell them to go fuck themselves

However i accept that would be a bit of an over reaction - if there were a load of new riders out it might have been the case that one of the more experienced riders thought you were one of the new riders and were pushing on too hard compared to the rest of the group.

That. Benefit of the doubt and all that. Don't get bent out of shape over it.

Sounds like they might have thought you started off with them and then rode ahead? You clearly did nothing wrong - probably just a misunderstanding.

    Spot on.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.

You said yourself they had some newbies; they must have thought you were one. Nothing malicious.

Are we really discussing this? You rode your bike, chatted to a group and then went on your way. One of the leaders of the group thought you were one of their newbies and tried to inform you of the group etiquette. You rode off and are now peeved. Why didn't you just politely say, "I'm not part of your group". End of.

I'm not peeved, just wanted to know if I should have held back and waited that's all.

So you think that the act of cycling on the roads is such a totalitarian activity, that just because you happened across another group of riders whilst you were out, you thought that there was some strict protocol you should observe, and you feared you had broken this protocol because of the called out admonishment!

What total and utter tosh, the guy just mistook you for one of the newbies, so in answer to your original question, YES you did do soemthing wrong, you came onto an internet forum bleating about it, instead of just politely pointing out to the other guy that you were not a part of his group, and bidding him farewll and a good ride.
  • Don't think he's bleating - but don't think it had occurred at the time to s@intsteve that he had been mistaken for one of the new club members...

Ooh it's a bit scary out here. I'm going to pop back in to the beginners forum where I belong :)

Easy sorted, join a club and ride with their jersey.. then you wont be taken for a newbie.
Other than that, grow a beard and whistle as you ride and just utter the words, "audax mate, must crack on"

Thanks - this is exactly the case.
  • Yup, riding as part of an organised group it's bad form to overtake the leader, but new guys don't always realise that. I'd bet that they mistook you for one of the group, one who didn't know the rule. Other than that, I cannot conceive of a reason for the shout - groups are passed by lone cyclists, or lone cyclists passed by groups, all the time without any problems. If they thought you were getting a cheeky tow then *maybe* a cheeky comment might be expected, but that's about the limit.

You weren't wearing a Forbidden Jersey or Riding Without Helmet were you? ;)

    No.

The chap encountered something he wasn't used to and came here for advice, and he's now got the answer politely from other forum members.

No need to be a smart arse.
  • Thanks for the reply. Only been cycling seriously for about 6 months so yes it was a scenario I hadn't encountered before and the reason I said I was annoyed in my first post was because I didn't know what else I should have done.

I'll certainly bear the comments in mind if it happens again!
