a shop serviced my bike recently and the gears were noisy and lever stiff etc. took the bike back and still wasnt sorted properly but was made a bit better

after cleaning it today i noticed the front derailier cable was not seated inside the guide under the bottom bracket and instead had cut grove into it as it was running at an angle, which was making the lever stiff due to it cutting into the plastic.

i have set the cable right now and all seems fine but will this have a chance to have damaged the cable in any way? i cant see any frayed cable or anything and luckily i havent really ridden the bike more than a couple of miles since this was done due to the weather.

Not good. If they made the mistake of routing the cable over the guide wrong the first time it would be forgiveable as mistakes happen but since you took it back to correct the problem and they still didn't catch it I'd say that's a little shoddy. This is just your basic cable routing that any competent mechanic would catch in a quick eyeballing. It probably won't hurt the cable but I would request the shop replace the guide as it's been damaged by their incorrect cable routing. Best advice is to learn to do it yourself and skip the time and expense of going back and forth to the mechanic. 8)
