Handlebar mount for samsung galaxy s2?

I'm having a bit of trouble deciding which handlebar mount to use for my galaxy S2. It's hard to see the quality when they're on line and my experience of phone accessories is that they can be quite cheaply made . What I want to avoid is it flying off when I go over a bump. I'm not convinced bsy the ones I've seen on ebay, It does need to be bar mounted so I can use it for Strava.

Thanks

Paul

  • Not used the strava app, but cant you just set it to 'go' then stick it in your pack?

You can but I suppose I'd quite like to see the phone so I know where it is and it's easier to stop and start the app. I'd love to get a garmin but I just can't justify the 400 quid for the offroad one!

Not sure I would like an expensive delicate smart phone on my bars. You will fall off sometime and I bet the phone lands screen first on a rock. Wouldnt it be better to get a cheapo 2nd hand phone for biking.

If you just want to log your rides you could get a GPS watch you can get a Garmin forerunner for about £110 or a Bryton Cardio for about the same.

If you are not interested in nav the Garmin edge 200 is decent and is around £70 after cash back.

You know that Strava automatically marks segments? You just switch it on at the start of a ride and it'll mark every segment you ride, without you having to press start and stop all the time.

Or you can log the ride with something else entirely: either another app (I use endomondo and then export to Strava as a GPX) or a cheap GPS logger (like a little box you can just switch on and off and then plugin to a computer at the end of a ride).

Cool, thanks guys. I'll have a look at the different options, I quite like the idea of having a computer type thing so I can look at current speeds but I might well look at the lower end Garmin as I don't suppose I really need the all singing all dancing one!

    Cheers

Strava app is largely pointless to be looking at while you ride, and you can't follow routes on it. Just set it, pop it in a pocket/bag and forget it. The web site sorts the rest out.

Also with an S2 the screen will go into power save every 10 seconds or whatever and you have to swipe to unlock it and maybe do other things whilst riding. Not the safest of things to be doing! You can't leave the screen on permanently. Battery will be dead within an hour. Barely lasts a ride as it is anyway, thus I use my old Nokia for GPS tracking. All day riding and battery still at 90%.

Personally, unless you want to follow a route and really need to see the route while you ride, I'd keep GPS stuff in the bag and concentrate on the ride instead. I rarely need to follow routes and if I do it's only when I get to the end of a trail/path I stop to work out which way I'm going. Easier thing I find is to have a copied section of an OS map printed out in a plastic wallet or laminated. No battery to rely on and takes a sectond to fiddle with to read plus no need to take gloves off to swipe it ;)

Are you that forgetful that you wouldn't remember where you put it?

Recently, I have found great joy in laughing at the misfortune of people who've crashed their mountain bikes, whilst their expensive little smartphones were stuck to the handlebars.
Now they have lots of little pieces of smartphone, RESULT! :D

It is vastly amusing. We came across a group of lads laughing at one of there number who had his poserphone on the bars got a puncture and without thinking flipped the bike over not so gently resting the screen on a sharp stone. Apparently he had only had the phone about 24 hours.

    I am actually that forgetful....

P.S why is that a result? Do you take some pleasure in other peoples misfortunes?

To be honest I'm more paranoid it'll fall out of my pocket or if I have it in my bag it will smash on something. These phones are a liability, I'm sure glass screens are there as a money spinner for the phone companies parts department

Yes, I do - I stated that in my post.
Smartphones have their place, but it's most certainly NOT on the handlebar of a mountain bike.

I believe titanium screens failed because you can't see much through them.

Well they did used to make them out of plastic. Sorry, I thought this was the buying advice section, not the "Have an argument with the forums various per trolls" section...

    Lighten up maybe.
Who's arguing? Just opinions. Some obviously more valid than others. (Yeehaa obviously has internet access from his padded cell).
But consensus seems to be that handlebars are not the best place for delicate stuff.
I think you will find that the glass used is incredibly tough, but even metal bits of bikes break in crashes.

I can suggest many ways of destroying a phone for free. How's that for "buying advice"?
I'm expressing my opinion that sticking something like that on the handlebars is about as dumb as pinching a bull by the bollocks.

Probably best to stick to boy sheep for that sort of thing.

That's fair enough guys, I've taken on board the point that strapping a phone to your bars is a bad idea, that's why I asked about it first, If I knew the answer I wouldn't bother asking!

I get it that you two like to wind people up on here, just don't be surprised if someone takes the bait! I remember Yeehaa from old (I'm guessing you were banned and had to make a new account?) looks like you're still up to your old tricks ;-)

Hard to gauge someones tone on the internets n'all, I find it quite an agressive forum at times but then there are people on here who are generally quite knowlegeable too....

I don't aim to wind anyone up - some people just don't like honesty. I'm not going to mince my words or sugar coat anything, because we're all adults here, right?

That we are, maybe it's your way with words, as long as you aren't actively trying to piss people off that's cool, I shall take your words with a large pinch of salt in the future ;-)

Except for Jay12, who is 12, but haven't seen him around lately. Presume he hit puberty and discovered sex and drugs and rock and roll (or rap or whatever sh1t kiddies are into these days).
