Further from my original post, narrowed my selection to a cannondale 2012 caad 10 5 105 available for £999, or will wait a bit for the 2013 cannondale caad 8 5 105, for id imagine £1050 which looks pretty good in the cannondale 2013 catelogue. (BMC streetracer in the flesh is just too ugly and aesthetics although not that important, are a factor for me)

now i appreciate most say the caad10 105 is amazing and the best alu frame, and it is cheaper than the caad 8 (in the sale) and will come with better specs but for a first time road bike is that something i really want?

the caad 8 is marketed as a great introduction to road bikes, whilst the caad 10 is marketed as the next step up for more serious types, and this is by cannondale themsleves.

now it seems a no brainer in spec and cost terms, but for me as a first road bike would the caad8 be more suitable, even though id ne payig more for a inferior bike?

Thoughts opinions?

thanks

No, that's 4 things you really want!
  • is that realy the case though, would a caad 10 not be too 'advanced' for a newbie?

No - definitely go for the 10. It's a bike that will get better with you the more you ride it.

  • Apologies for hijacking. I'm at exactly the same point and see the Caad 10 105 at Westbrook and Drakes for 999. Cannot believe what god value this represents considering what other mnfr's have as "equivalent" without 105...

Has anybody managed to persuade a Surrey (or close by) LBS to match the deal... if so how ?

    Thanks !

Errrr..if you have a LBS that has stock, then simply ask them to price match
  • no one bar drakes has the caad in my frame size now, plus drakes cant deliver cannondales at the mo, so ive given up on the caad10. they only have onein my size left, but there in leeds and im in london so its a non starter unless they vchange there mind re delivery. im going for a bianchi c2c (not sure which) now anyway...less race focussed and agresive than the caad 10.

No, it's not too 'advanced' for a newbie, nothing is too advanced for a newbie, you'll be fine. Very well regarded frame, rated very highly for an alu bike. Get a test ride first imo, and go from there.
  • Evans Leeds will price match. Return train ticket to Leeds is 80 quid from Kings Cross.

    worth the go for sure,

i got evans to price match the cadd 10 to 1050 here, only 50 more, but they were too far away to match leeds. (hargroves has it as 1050)

test riding this weekend, cant wait. if it doesn't blow me away (im sure it will) i will just get the boardman team.
    Bikes: CAAD8 105, CAAD10 105.
  • Hargorves £1045.... Just saw that! Just done exactly the same to save myself a pap train journey ! Sooooo excited.

a bike is a bike, got two wheels and a handlebar...how advance can it be that you don't know how to ride it :?:

you know how to ride a bike...so any road bike isn't different in terms of that. what's different are sitting position and the feel of the bike when you ride it. CAAD 10/8 not going to be massively noticeable difference between the 2. and you will get used to the riding position and the bike very quickly.

Get one that you like the look of...end of.
