Hi,

I take part in 10 mile time trials but don't use a speedo, so i was wondering what the formula is for working out the average speed. i.e. 10 mile in 23.12.

    miles=10
    h=0;
    m=23;
    s = 12;
    averageSpeedMPH = miles * 3600 / (3600 * h + 60 * m + s)
    which in this case was 25.86 mph

    NB: 60 s in a minute, 3600 s in hour

    It's nearly as hard as logging on to the internets

    If you have a smartphone with gps then you can download an app that will record your speed, distance and average speed using gps, although some are less accurate than others.

    If you covered 10miles in 23min 12 seconds
    You need to get the time into a singular common number, so not longer minutes & seconds
    23mins = 1380 seconds
    Add togethr with the 12secs so total number of seconds to cover 10miles = 1392
    10miles / 1392 seconds = 0.0071839
    Multiply that by how many seconds in 1 hour, 60mins x 60 seconds = 3600
    Gives you 25.86mph
  • Anyway you should be using kph. Rule 24 refers. http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/#24
    So, you did an average of 41.89kph. :D:D

    years back I did an Excel spreadsheet that showed the average mph you need to do to achieve certain times between 20 and 30 minutes. I found it quite helpful, but its long lost now on an old pc I had.

    Thank you everyone for the help on this, I have a computer, but just needed the formula. I didn't think that you all would have so many different thoughts on the subject.

    Thanks again.

    From my experience in distance running, I always preferred meters per second. To do this, convert 10 miles into KM by multiplying 10 by 1.6. That will give you 16k or 16'000m of which then you divide by the time taken. If MPS then in a second format. Once you've found out how fast you travel MPS, you can multiply by 60 (how many meters per minute) then multiply again by 60 (how many meters per hour). Then you divide by 1600 (how many meters in a mile) and there is your speed in MPH. I think MPH will be more relevant to you than say a distant runner. Also to work out how many minutes per mile you do, you do 60/speed in MPH.
