Carerra Subway gears question

Hello,
I am 100% noob when it comes to cycling/commuting semi-seriously so please forgive me if this is a really silly question.
I bought this bike last week and have been using it to commute to work every day this week which is a 6 mile round trip.

One thing I've noticed is that when using the mid range gears (such as 2/5) it's pretty noisy and the chain seems to make a clicking sound. It's still fairly smooth but is this normal?
I don't notice it so much when I change gears to go up or down hill.
Any feedback would be great.
