Hardtail vs. Full Sus?

Hi
I am looking to get back into mountain biking having been quite keen on my old hardtail about 10 years ago but never really knowing about full sus. I'm going to buy a new bike but can't decide between getting a hardtail or a full sus, would any one be able to provide a little advice? I can afford to spend up to around £1,500.00 but if I go for a hardtail then would like to spend probably around £850.00. I want to do mainly cross country but with the ability to do a few tricky sections and so would perhaps lean towards full sus. But then I also like the flexibility of a hardtail, i.e. being able to do a leisurely day's road cycling as well.
Would you say that hard tails would always be better for cross country/not too hard-core trails?
If any one has got any tips then I'd really apprecitate it.
Thanks

Can of worms.
The way I see it, a full suss bike is just better for riding off road. It allows greater traction, and a well designed frame won't cost you much eficiency either.
Unless you're riding on smooth roads, I cannot see why a hardtail would be beneficial, if you can afford a decent full suss bike.0 -
For a leisurely days road cycling - a road bike.
For everything else there's a full sus.
End of.

Test some out, it is the only way. I don't see why you'd spend less on the HT if you have the money.0
