'Stealth Bikes' Why?

I cannot help notice that there is an increasing amount of 'Stealth' looking road bikes both shown off on this forum and in the LBS. What is it with the pre-occupation to try and have a bike that has all the cosmetic attributes of the B2 bomber?

C'mon - what do you expect. People can't keep buying red, white and black bikes forever!

You need to get rid of those wheels decals.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

Actually - i need to get rid of those wheels - they weight a ton (Fulcrum Racing 7's)

Its my winter bike so i'm not really bothered how it looks. It rides brilliantly mind - and is probably a damn site better than most winter bikes Jim (and only 17lb even with heavy wheels) - so I dont really care if you like it's look or not.

Oh and if I get bored of the colour, I can strip it down and respray it for the cost of 1/3l of paint (£14 or so).

    Not when describing that bike.

Six of one half a dozen of the other for me. Not a massive fan of plain black but a bare carbon bike does hide a few knocks and scratches better than flash paint job. Mine best bike is 6 years old now and if I'd bought the white version instead of the carbon it'd be looking a bit of a shed by now.

That said I've never looked at someone's bike in a race and thought I wish mine looked as good as that.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

mmhmm - though I'd prefer something in the middle myself, which is what the look of a typical steel bike achieves so well. Are there mainstream manufacturers that do the same with cf?

I can see the appeal but they're not the safest bikes to ride at night. Can't see the bloody things, just the cyclist in garish florescent garb. Lookslike he's floating in mid air, can cause a crash that can! :P

Fair enough, though I only commented on it as you posted a picture of it completely unprompted. I would suggest, if you're obviously this touchy about peoples opinions of the bike that you don't post pictures of it on the internet.

maybe you should do the same with your opinion of someones bike when that too is unprompted?

Absolutely - given that this is a thread about plain black "stealth" bikes and given my blatantly obvious post with smiley prior to my pic making light of the subject!!

Judging by Jim's post history - it seems he has little in the way of helpful comments to add to this forum it seems. Just saying like...
  • "Stealth bikes" why?

So you can sneak up on other cyclists undetected.

    But don't tell anyone, it's a secret.

Sneak up on all those strava segments / going on a lone breakaway without anyone seeing :wink:

Yes, sorry Paul, I really must try to take discussions about the ubiquity of 'stealth' bikes a little more seriously.

I'm sorely tempted to sign off my post with either an emoticon or a pathetically useless banality such as 'just sayin' like.....' though I shall resist.

That's not stealth, it's shiney black.
    Plus, I bet it'd reflect radar like a b*stard !

A C59 with matt black paint and black Colnago decals - lovely. You know why. You can go thro' the radar undetected and other riders are thinking 'was that a ?' those Movistar Pinarellos look nice but only when the sun shines.
