Expensive ride out

Well I had a ride out with Tony (Toe Knee on here) on Saturday and had a blow out on the rear wheel. Found a split in the tyre (a Vittoria Corsa EVO CX with only 3 or 400 miles) of about 10mm long - probably run over some glass I guess. This was so bad it was allowing the inner tube to start bulging through!! Anyway - made it home with no more punctures and now have a new tyre bought and fitted (Thanks HighOnBikes on ebay - next day delivery! )

38 mile ride for me and £33 for a new tyre - thats about 87p per mile!!

On Sunday I went out and punctured the rear. Then I blew out both replacement tubes only then to find a 1cm gash in the sidewall of my 200 mile old Pro4. 20 quid taxi ride home was not fun, but hey, shit happens.

    I can beat that.

On a protracted ride home from work last week the rear mech hanger fatigued and dropped the mech into the wheel. One spoke was particularly badly caught and pulled the rim in at that point. So:

    £15 New hanger
£10 New spokes on drive side
    £40 New rim

Had to take links out of the chain and single-speed the bike 12 miles back to base. Then had a near miss when I was pedalling too fast over some bumps and the chain jumped up to the next biggest sprocket - I thought the chainstay was going to crack! Now that would have been pricey...

  • Amazing! On Wed I noticed a nasty split on my rear Open Corsa Evo CX (approx 2000 miles of riding). I wasn't using my bike again until Saturday so I stuck it on its stand and ordered a new one from Ribble - but they were late with my last order so I ordered another one via High on Bikes with next day delivery on the Thur (and I'd send the Ribble one back). Friday came and no HoB delivery - but good old Ribble got my new tyre to me instead. In the meantime I was doing some work in the house when SSSSHHHHHHHHHHH...the inner tube had popped through the cut and blew!

NB - The HoB tyre arrived on the Monday and it's being sent back for a full refund inc postage costs.

Had a tyre grow a mushroom last year and unfortunately was a few hundred yards from Halfords at the time so popped in and ended up with some Continental piece of shoot for 17 quid. Went to wherever it was I was going and on they way back noticed I had a flat this time but was closer to an Evans this time and decided to use their free pump they leave outside. Turned out the valve was damaged and ended up paying 6 quid for a new tube. Only one they had with a long valve (60mm) was a Specialized. All in all it cost me 23 quid for both when I could have got a taxi for a tenner instead.

I've had a puncture before, too.

Once I hit a recessed drain really hard and got a pinch-flat, so got a new tube. Next ride I got another puncture. Went to get another new tube and discovered a cut in the tyre. So, new tyre and two new tubes in the space of 2 days...

I attempted to repair every one, but re-punctured them trying to get the tyre back on the rim. I can do it with MTB tyres, but the road ones I'm just crap at.

I rode 0.2 miles before being wiped out by a car. Bike was written off and worth £1000 so that is £5000 a mile :(

Luckily I don't have to pay it :D

Errrr, that just means you are crap at fitting road tyres

Dear me, if you can manage to ride a bike without falling off you can repair inner tubes. The two activities are about equally difficult!

But if you puncture repaired tubes while refitting them, surely you puncture 'new' tubes while refitting them too?

  • All amateur level stuff.

Last month, I was out riding and spotted a bike shop. "Oh, so that's where Cadence Sport are" I thought to myself. Which leads to the inevitable new bike purchase and a £2,000 hole in the wallet!
They use their cars as shopping baskets; they use their cars as overcoats.

  • Met a bloke last weekend on a canyon Ultimate cf slx 9.0 ltd who had a rider crash just to the side of him. This riders bars went straight through his spokes and went straight into his seat stays which proceeded to snap while also bending and snapping a few spokes on his mavic ksyrium sr's. The bloke that actually crashed had very little damage except a scraped shifter and buggered bar tape.
I could just see the poor bloke wanted to cry but he just went very quiet and sat on a nearby bench.

At that rate per mile it would be cheaper to drive...!

Regular Saturday ride, mate insists on using out his Cervelo race bike - finds the front tub is flat before we start and replaces with new Veloflex carbon. Hits pothole later in ride - flats front tub and cracked Zipp 808 rim...There's a good reason why most don't use chi-chi race kit for training.
