To protect my new pride and joy I am looking at the Abus Granite 54 d-lock. It comes in two sizes 23 or 30cm......any advice as to which one to got for?

I like the idea of the compact 23cm but will I curse not buying the bigger one as its more practical?

and do you guys really attach these to your bike? I've gone and bought a bike that weighs 10kg and it'll break my heart to attach 2kg worth of lock to it.

When I used to commute I chucked the lock in my pack and prob would if I needed to carry it with my xc bike - if you need it with you on a ride then pack or frame is kinda the only options unless you want to mail it ahead.

Bigger one means you can prob take off the front wheel and secure the whole shebang with one lock?

I use a Kryptonite Fahgeddabahdit(?) Mini, using the logic that if the lock only just fits around the seat tube, through the back wheel and around a Sheffield stand then there's no room to get a tool in to force the lock open.

A massive lock is more practical in that you can lock round a bigger post, but the extra space means that a thief can (apparently) get a bottle jack in there and pop the lock open.
