Hardrock Sport Disc 2011 - bent chainring

Just cleaning up after our first trip to Llandegla with son's 2011 Hardrock Sport Disc. Noticed that the chain was catching, and discovered that the large chainring has been hit and bent (should have spotted this based on the cracked plastic protector too I suppose).

All I know about the ring is that it is a Suntour 42T ring, the branding on the pedal has worn off so don't know the precise model. I do know that the whole chainset is on an Octalink spline. The outer ring has just 4 bolt holes to fit onto the middle ring, and four screws for the protector. It says SR Suntour PFF on the main ring (which is the one I need to replace).

Any suggestions a) of the "right" replacement and b) of a good value place to get hold of one?

Thanks!

Matt

if it is replaceable any 104mm BCD chain ring will do.

Yes, its replaceable; already got it off the bike. But blimey a single chain ring is blinkin' expensive!! Cheapest I've seen is about 20 quid.

Might as well get the whole crank and chain set instead.

Cheers for the 104 BCD help.

    £13 from CRC

Far cheaper than a whole new chainset.
How old is the chain, cassette, chainrings currently on there though?

6 months, and none of it hard going apart from the last 11 miles. Thanks for the link.

In that case, you'll probably be ok with a new chainring. If you're done a load of miles and worn things down, then replacing one part of the drivetrain can cause it to mesh badly with the worn parts still on the bike.
But unless you've been doing some lunatic-miles, then the big ring should be fine after that much time.

Try whacking it with a hammer first.
I've used a rock on the side of the trail, and it's suprisingly effective.

You whack off with a rock?
So that's what they mean by getting your rocks off?

if its the same crankset as on the 2010 model, which it looks like they are,the chainrings are threaded and use a single piece chainring bolt

Thanks to all for the help. The other bit I need replacing is the bash guard, which was a cheap plastic disc attached to the large chainring. Well, I suppose we can do without it - but that would be treating the large ring as a bash guard for the other two, and based on this weekend's performance I expect he's going to need some protection.

Once again, price seems to be excessive for these, and I'm struggling to find larger ones for a reasonable price.

I thought ebay would be my friend but either I'm searching for the wrong description (I'm using "bash guard 42T" mostly) or I need to get real and appreciate how pricey these things are!!

    Any help gratefully received.

WRT to the original question, I'm sorely tempted to shell out £30 rather than £13 and get a full set of Shimano M410 Alivio 42/32/22 crankset for when he busts something else; opinions?

    Thanks!

What you had was a trouser guard more than a bash guard. As you've found out, it doesn't actually protect the chainrings.

You don't need it. Bash guards normally only fit double or single ring setups, not the triple you've got.

If the axle length is correct for it (would need to check):

Thanks both. I quite like the replaceable rings on the M410, and CRC have it for £27.99 at the moment, so will probably go with that.

Disregarding yeehaa's derailment, I'd still try a hammer first. It does work.
