No real point to this thread other than to show off that I just realised that I last did todays 46 mile ride exactly a year ago, but now I'm fitter, stronger and most significantly around 10-15kg lighter. I started cycling about 18 months ago...

Average speed
Aug 2011 - 16.2mph
Aug 2012 - 18.8mph

Average HR
Aug 2011 - 168bpm
Aug 2012 - 152bpm

Modest headwind (honestly!!! 15-18mph according to the weather sites). Fairly flat / rolling route after an initial 600m climb in the first quarter of the ride. Same temperature (give or take about 1.5degC according to Garmin) and it's always windy as it's a ride towards the North West Coast.

Anyway, cyber pats on the back welcome :-)

    *Big cyber pat* :D

Well done on that. It's so rewarding when you stick at something (especially when you enjoy it) and really notice the improvements over time!

I have no idea what's going on here.

I think 75% of my improved performance is down to the weight loss - the other 25% due to cardiovascular conditioning and more honed muscles etc (that's not a strictly scientific observation, by the way!).

It's amazing what losing a bit of weight does for performance, and it becomes an addictive cycle!
  • Well done!
    You must be very proud.

Don't forget mental attitude played a part. Keep up the great work.

Well done. I'm a fit bunny from many years of running and lean as a whippet but I have noticed significant improvement over the last six months. Today I did a steady ride which turned out to be faster than my flat out ride six months ago. Not world beating yet but I'm happy, and now the Olympics is over there won't be quite so many distractions ...

If you put the same effort in this year compared to last year just think how fast you'd be then....

You do realise that wind directions in weather reports indicate where the wind is coming from not where it's going to don't you? ;)
  • Do you mean a climb that is 600m high or you’d done 600m of climbing?

    oi cheeky sod! (thegibdog)!!

600m of climbing according to Garmin in the first 10 or so miles. Barely 200m in the final 30 miles.

Weight loss is the key isn't it? I've dropped 10 kilos since January - no 'dieting' or anything, just stopped drinking alcohol and cycled more basically. I was in the gym last night and I picked up a 10kg weight - the idea of carrying that much extra weight around you all the time was quite thought-provoking...

weight loss is important yes. im fortunate that i dont have any issues as have always been skinny as a whippet. increased cardio vascular capacity, leg strength, riding technique and confidence are all important factors
