Upgrade a carrera Vulcan vs new bike

Hi guys, I am new to this forum, and this is my first post, hopefully will be around for a while.
I have a standard 3 or 4 year old Carrera Vulcan at the moment, and want to get into a bit of trail and xc riding. Do you think the Vulcans frame is worthy of upgrading, or is it worth just going for a new bike?
From the off I think I would need new forks, as there is only preload adjustment and no lockout on mine, also probably hydraulic discs as epposed to cable that is on at the moment.
Also as I side note, my front wheel has a small amount of side to side play as I call it, it wobbles a tiny amount on the axle, I would hazard a guess at new wheel bearings, is this right?
Thank you for any help given, now off to look around at the various other topics....

Without knowing specs it's hard to say, but lockout is not something to change a bike for, some cable discs are excellent, and wheel might need bearings, or more likely just a bit of grease and adjustment.I don't do smileys.

I went from a carrera vulcan to a kraken
I love it but it's not exactly standard spec anymore!
What would your budget be for upgrades/a new bike?0 -
OK, so spec is as follows
Suntour SR XCM front forks
sram sx4 shifters
sram sx4 front and rear derailleurs
Tektro brake levers and callipers
budget, probably about 5-600, maybe a little more if I can persuade my wife, I have some bargaining power, as she doesn't want me to buy a motorbike lolKev
